Default Need help with 520 conversion

I have an 02 ds with a +4 swingarm, and was wondering what length and kind of chain everybody's using. I have already got a set of Sidewinder ti-moly sprockets. I will be riding in nothing but sand with a 70hp motor. Need a chain that will hold up very well. Is there an easy way to calculate the extra length needed for the swingarm? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

120 link should do the trick.

Be sure and buy a chain breaker & chain press from Rocky Mountain ATV. It will be the best $20 you ever spent.

Have whoever you order the chain from send you a couple extra master links for good measure.

Hello all. Real quick i'd just like to say that i'm new to the forum and i allready have some good ideas on what i want to do to my recentely purchased 04 DS from reading the various threads. Mucho info here thats for sure.

I just got my 520 conversion kit from sidewinder in the mail. Put it on tonight, no probs except that the new 520 chain doesn't seem to want to fit down over the rib that sticks up on the chain wear that goes over the end of the swingarm. I just want to know if anyone else has had a similar experience and what the fix is if any, or should i just run it? It rolls fine around the counter shaft sprocket doesn't seem to affect the way the chain runs onto it. Haven't had a chance to ride it yet and was just wondering if i'm worring about nothing. Oh another question, does anybody make a new chain wear (or guide) that allows the 520 to ride down over the rib correctly? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

I might be misunderstanding you so take this with a grain of salt, but a new chain guide won't have a rib in it. It comes flat on the inside of the bottom.....or if it is the on up by the counter sprocket, it is the top. I think the chain wears a groove leaving a rib in the center. Your new chain is narrower so it won't drop down over it. I don't think it will hurt anything. It will just start making its own groove on whatever is there.

It has been so long since i looked at the OEM DS chain rollers and guides that I might be way off on this. I suppose you could tell by looking at it if the chain made the rib or if it was a factory mold.

Sincerely,
AHKN

DSNUT, thanks for the reply. I'm just going to run it and see how it works. This bike has such low hours on it that it hasn't had a chance to really put any wear on the chain guide so i'm assuming that it's molded this way from the factory. Don't think I'll have any probs tho.

Dragon.......I wish i was. I heard the weather was great. I got stuck up here in the north valley doing the family thing. Oh well the turkey was awesome! LOL

Went to sand lake today (12/2/06) it was beautiful and even the sand was semi smooth early on. The new 520 sidewinder chain and sprockets worked perfect.

Happy duning everybody!!!!
