Ds650 Advice on faster acceleration
#1
HEy all, im new to this and have just signed up 2day. im a 16 year old guy in highschool and have just bought myself a Ds650 Baja X (wich is stock) ... my problem is thou that a number of other riders in my school have Suzuki Ltr450's which have faster acceleration then my "bomb" , my school isnt that big so we dnt have much place to race in it, so acceleration is a important factor in winning.. is there any advice u guys can give me to help increase my acceleration, anything from parts to put on it, to simple things i can do to get a better pull away. thanx.

Start with dropping your front sprocket down a tooth or two, stock is usually a 16t, try a 15 or 14. By doing this you will lower your gearing, giving you faster wheel speed and outrunning those 450's. I did this last year due to a bad trans and couldn't use 2nd as I wanted, it has now been repaired and I am cleaning up at the dunes.

gearing is a great place to start, if your riding in dirt 22" rears help a lot. bigger yet get lighter. horse power to weight ratio. the ds is around 500 pounds ride ready. at 42 hp or there abouts stock you can do the math.

If you have stock piston, cams & CDI don't run anything over 87 octane fuel. Look for the oldman racing stock carb mod thread. If you can find a billet exhaust end cap that would be a cheap help. You need to find the HPR or ODP end cap for best results. A ported aluminum carb intake would help also. These are all bolt on mods that would help & not require opening up the motor.

Now you said you are racing in your school.........what school is this? I wish i would have gone to a highschool that allows ATV's!!!
Gearing, modify your end-cap, remove your airbox lid and setup your carb. This is the cheapest place to start.

If that's the case, why do they put on the gas cap to run 92 or better?
Thanks,
