2001 DS 650 Starts then stops
I have been riding my DS for a year now with very little problems. For the last several months I havent had a chance to ride it, so It has sat without starting up.
Saturday I tried to take it out but the battery was dead, so I charged it for several hours and tried again and it started up for about 5 sec. and then it died and would not start again. I let the battery on the trickle charge until the next night and I tried again with the same result. I did it again today with the same result. It starts for about 5 sec. and then it dies and you cant start it again.
I have taken out the plugs, cleaned them and checked for spark. Spark seems to be good, gas seems to be flowing. I have tried starting it up with the choke on and with it off, no difference.
I have read alot of article here dealing with DS's not starting but could not find anything quite the same as my problems.
Are there any ideas?
Thanks,
Scott

Thanks all for the info. I checked the carb and it is hooked up correctly, I removed the gas cap, but I did not change the gas, while doing this I changed the gas valve to 'res' and then tried to start and it started right up, after turning it back to 'reg' it ran for awhile and then stopped. It sounds like my gas value is plugged somehow.
Any pointers I should know before taking it off?
Thanks!

I am going to take the valve off and clean it. If it still happens, maybe the regular line going to the tank is plugged. I am wondering if the DS is anything like my Seadoo's, where you have a slightly longer hose that goes into the tank for the reserve and a shorter line for the regular line? If so then that end could be obstructed with something.
Thanks for all the help!

Before you take the petcock out I would put more gas in it and try it, like Ron said it may be just low enough on fuel not to pick it up in the on position. Even though you can see gas does not mean it is over the pick up, that may be why it runs in the res position only.

Well, I finally took it out today. I feel like a dork, because I filled it up with gas and it was almost empty. So, there wasnt any problem at all except not enough gas.
Thanks for all of the help and replies!

PS.
I ride at Carnegie OHV (In California) most of the time, anyone have an idea what is the best tires for the bike on this terrain? I still have the original tires on. I am getting to the point where I need to change.
Thanks!
