I am helping a buddy who is a good friend. He owns a 2003 polaris sportsman 700 efi. I know this is this is the Bomb/can-am forums but i am getting no love or info on the polaris forums, maybe its my forum name? anyway we are kinda a brotherhood over here. if any of you know anything about the clutch on these things let me know. basically what i got is a quad that is creeping while in gear. since it is a automatic when you put it in gear if you let off the brake it wants to take off on ya. from what i have gathered by searching the threads about these quads is they have a washer that wears somewhere in the primary clutch that will cause it to creep and it makes the gear selector freeze. it literaly will not let you shift from low to high or reverse etc. even when you have stopped completely and depressed the foot and hand brake. there is too much tension in the clutch and it will not release. if any of you know anything about this let me know. i know its a long shot but i told my buddy i would get it going for him and thats what i am gonna do. i figured the guys on this forum may understand that better than elsewhere. thanks in advance for anhy input.

What did he do? I've run my sportsman in to much water and it came in thro the pull starter, it was slipping hardcore and over the winter the water froze up, couldnt start it w/ electric start and the pull cord was froze in there. Had that drained and fixed but i know the water thing will get in there and cause problems, especially creepin along in gear, u really gotta rev it for that, until u get the water out.
Only thing diff from ur post is that when i put mine in gear, it doesnt go anywhere, it'll sit steady no problem, so thats gotta be a good tell on a problem for ya, wish i could be more help, lemme know if u need me to check anything on mine

Mine YES I HAD A POLARIS 400 @ one time. And it did not like to stay still so i poped the nut loose and seperated the sections. And went to a quality hardware store bought a 55 thousandths shim percision washer and insterted it between both sections put the nut back on and she stayed completely still and wham she came out of the hole like a rocket.because she allowed the engine to rev just a tad and gather power before total engagment.kind of like a stall converter. i hope this helps and i do belive they have the same clutch sytem.

There are a few different plastic bushings and shims in the primary clutch (Forward portion of the clutch) that can wear out. This will allow you to rebuild everything in the primary clutch: http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/...&leafCatId=&mmyId=398
The wear is increased with snow plowing/towing and repetitive forward/reverse shifting (like when plowing). The warmer the clutch & engine is, the more pronounced the creep will be. Just like the friction clutch on a manual tranny, these things have wearable/replaceable parts and need to be rebuilt from time to time. You may also want to replace the drive belt while you are in there.
