2000 ds 650, What maintenance, things should i check
#1
Just bought a used but in great shape ds 650. Real **** about maintenace on my bikes and atv's. Anyways are there things that need to be checked regularly. how often oil changes? what oil people using? oil filters? Location and how often to change?
Im going to try and find repair manual/
I run amsoil 20/50 in my 2007 wr 450 and amsoil 10/40 in my 2006 brute force 750. either of these oils work in the ds?
thanks
Any performance or other tips greatly appreciated, Also what size filter does it have? I looked in the book and there are 2 and 3 inch.
thanks again

First off congrats on the bike. Change the oil every 10hrs of ride time, you can use full synthetic, that is what comes from the dealer. I use the Honda GN-4 it is semi synthetic and works great. Since it is a 2000 then the short filter is what you need. Yes the Amsoil will work, as long as it is bike oil, there are 2 places to get all the oil out. The first is the plug under the transmission, that will drain the engine, the other is kinda messy, it is under the nose of the bike and will drain all over the a-arms. It also takes about 3 quarts of oil.

Remove the airbox or at least the lid, if you can ride without all the unnecessary plastic, less weight. If you can afford to go with a 520 chain and sprocket kit, less rotating mass. It's not real cheap to make these faster, usually a carb and definitely get a GOOD rev box, the limit on the 2000's are real low. Both will run you about $800 for the pair, be patient some of this stuff goes cheap on this site keep checking the garage thread.

You should pick up a newer style oil filter cover so you can run the longer (newer style filter). For mods I say exhaust, rev box, and 520 conversion, and carb... in whatever order you can afford. When you open these things up they can be runners (even with a 335 pound jockey LOL).
For maintenance: make yourself some sort of valve setup for the oil tank drain. I used a fram sure drain and brass reducer, I've also seen people with small ball valve's. Either way it will save a huge mess... you'll see when you drop that oil plug for the first time. Check the oil screen under the hose barb (take hose off) next to the oil tank drain plug, and clean it if necessary.

FYI
it says in bold print in the owners manual never use synthetic oil in ATV, so synthetic oil is not in ATV from the factory
