Default Cooling?

Whats up, Dig this forum. Hey I have an '02 DS with an Alba pipe, jet and K&N. I have owned it since new with no problems but on my last trip here in southern Az It was warm outside but not hot yet, in the 90's, anyway I was riding pretty hard and my fan never came on. I know it should have. She didnt overheat but I know the fan should have from past experiances. Im running ice coolant and rotella oil. Anybody have any suggestions? thermostat maybe?

Default Cooling?

Welcome to the forums. The fan was a common problem on the DS's. What I would personally do is check the fuses to the bike first using a DVOM or test light to check to make sure they are fine. Check to see if you can find anything just by looking at it like any loose or connectors that are apart. Check on top of the thermostat housing where the ECT sensor is located especially. Most likely the problem is the ECT sensor, but you still want to check to see if the fan is still working properly by checking the resistance of the windings and checking to see if the rest of the circuit is in tact. Check to see if you can get a wiring diagram from the local dealership of the cooling fan circiut and check it with a DVOM.

I am not sure at what temp the light will come on for the DS nor what temperature rating the thermostat is. There is alot to play a role in the cooling system and you may boil over at a different time then someone else depednding on the correct mixture, the fan working, the heat exchanger not being clogged(radiator fins),air pockets in the cooling sytem, and a pressurized cooling system. If you have an overheating problem you will cause pre detonation in the cylinder due to the extra heat on the cylinder walls along with other damage to the engine. You will also get nice and hot coolant all over you if it starts to overheat. I would have to say that the thermostats are problably rated somewhere around the 190 range, but that is not an exact because different things get a different thermostat which it should be labeled on the thermostat itself.

the thermostat i believe is 175F well thats whats in mine anyway, you can check it by puttin a pan with some water on the stove and heating the water to 175 and dropping in the thermostat and see if it opens as for the fan i believe that the 00-02 Ds's had a fan problem and they went out quite a bit, mine still works tho = ]
