Outlander Reliability issues
#1
Hi all...new to the forum (not ATV'ing) and would like to ask a question about the Can-Am Outlander series ATV. The question is in regards to reliability. So...how reliable are the '08 and '09 Outlander series ATV's?
I have heard issues with the frame cracking on the older models ('04-'06) and brake issues as well. Any truth...or are they in a very limited fashion?
My plans are to purchase a 800+ cc ATV within the next few weeks. The Outlander is certainly on my very short list.
So any info is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
biz

There is an older thread on one of the Can Am forums about a large farming outfit that uses only CanAms. 20K hard miles on some of them. Thats all they will use. It is like anything else, take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. On the frame issue, there was a guy who posted everywhere about the weak frames. Seems he had a couple of collisions he wasn't talking about in his rants. True is, it is a very sound frame. It needs to be to handle the power. It is exposed and did not come with skids. Put some skids on and you are good to go. All quads should come with skids and CanAm did drop the ball on that one. I believe it has been solved with the new models.

I like everything about my Outty 800 as far as the ride, but I have had a few problems that BPR will not cover under warranty, and I can not speak to anyone from BPR to state my case</end quote></div>
Thanks for posting...I appreciate it. However...can you please list the few problems that you have had that BRP will not cover?
As a potential NEW owner...I am very interested. I realize that products break or things can go wrong, but that is where the company comes into play and backs there products.
Thanks again!

Just curious as to why you are restricting your choices to an 800 and have you given serious consideration to anything other than Polaris and Can AM.</end quote></div>
That's a good question. I have owned Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki products before...and all were very reliable.
1. Honda -- I do not currently like the idea of the Honda Rincon Auto tranny (3 spd) and the cc size is just on the smaller side. I do hear they are reliable...and all, but they just do nothing for me.
2. Yamaha -- The Grizz 700 is a really nice machine. Very reliable...and there technology is proven. Lots of Grizz on the trails...which shows they are top 4 for sure. They don't come with really good tires...and the size 25 is on the small size. I do not like to "mod" my machines...so that is why the Grizz 700 is 4th on my list.
3. Suzuki -- The last machine I owned was the QuadRunner 500 4x4. It was (and still is) a GREAT machine. Extremely reliable in all weather conditions and the tranny with the Hi/Lo feature tops. It's draw back was the manual shift into 4x4 and no locking diff up front. The new KingQuad 750 machines are GREAT also...and top 3 on my list. However...once again cheapish tires and 25's in size is not my preference. Plus...the rack system is well old fashion.
The Polaris -- I like the Rack system the 850cc and the new IRS...and IFS. The good quality and massive sized tires at 26. The AWD system is rather unique too.
The Can-Am 800 -- The hp of the 800cc is supposed to be fantastic. The XT model has all the goodies and factory installed at that! Plus more...etc.
So...this is where I am coming from. I don't "need" the big bore ATV and could easily have a 550 or 650, but I want more this time around.

Biz,
Thanks, I guess that is why there is more than one manufacturer. What some like, others don't. I don't think there is a "bad" one among them and they just keep getting better, just what you prefer which is all that counts. Good luck with your decision.

On 05 400 (even tho this is not your year). It is only 3wd, the brakes only lasted 1.5 seasons has an annoying exhaust shield rattle, & you have to do "Da Bomb rock" to shift gears fairly often. How they have addressed these things I am not sure but I was not impressed by them.
