Default Tweaking the ds

Hello everyone,
Last weekend I went riding for the first time since spring. It was a lot of fun, but i think my ds still isnt running right. When I get on it from the git go, she sputters. when i get on it from about 4k, she moves prett well. im thinking maybe I should activate the accelerator pump..possibly starving for fuel?? im not sure. also I was going to get new plugs, and a better throttle cable...that thing is sooo stiff. I can only ride for like 3-4 hours tops... ok ok, so the reason for the need for tweaking... I raced a 2006 kfx 400 in a corn field and we were side by side, and i kinda walked away from it. oh and it was bone stock...(i think i may have been spinning). But I figured there is something going on in the carbureator that is holding her back. Ive tried all of the recommended specifications for altitude and all that stuff, but she still sputters/hesitates? I want to get her running good so I can take her out on a good riding trip without worrying about her running rough. soo i was just wondering if any of you guys could help a brotha out?? haha thanks

Dave

its a tm45 carb. running a 50 pilot jet, 162.5 main, 3rd groove on the needle. someone also said maybe if i got a different exhaust with some backpressure, it would help.

The exhauset is not your problem. I've never had or tuned a TM45 but from what I recall many others had the low end sputter if they did not have the accelerator pump activated. Every thumb throttle I have felt connected to a TM45 had a really hard pull. There was a guy on this forum a couple of years ago (cant remember his name) who knew the TM45 inside and out. He had a lot of tuning tips as well as some mods he made to lighten the throttle pull. I would recommend searching the forum because there is a lot of good information on the TM45 from a couple of years back

Hightower is the user name, you need to find all of his tunning hints. Use the search feature.

I don't have my TM anymore, but my pull was not to bad and you pretty much have to use the accelerator pump to get the bottom end bog to go away.

You absolutely need the AP to get that carb to run right. Even Ron Woods knows there will be a stutter if the AP is not used, yet they remove them on all the carbs they sell. I've tried both ways and ended up using the AP activated with a very low squirt amount (remember, that carb was made for a Harley!). Check some pics of my TM45 setup in this thread:

I have a 25 Pilot, 175 main, needle on 3rd groove and the smallest AP squirt nozzle. My motor is the 730, with RW CDI, RW intake, Yoshi exhaust and Web 109 cams. My throttle pull is almost as light as stock with a custom AP spring and Ron Woods light return spring.

I owned that carb for a while, never had it tuned right, it was the hardest carb i've ever owned, i gave up and ordered a KMS fuel injection system and never fuddled with a carb after that haha
One thing when helping with carb setups is where you are located = elevation, as it makes a slight difference and a slight diff on the TM is night and day to power delivery, good luck with it!

Hey nick, I love your idea on the fuel injection, How much for a EFI kitt? and did you install it by yourself?

i have a TM48 & had a TM45 both worked perfectly after being tuned. take it to shop that has a dyno(don't be cheap) & have it tuned. if they know what they are doing they will be able to set the pump to work correctly. you will NEVER be able to hammer it from idle & not have a little stumble. mine is instant as long as i am above 3000rpms. below that i have to roll into it. as for the hard throttle pull i use an extended thumb lever. i did shorten the one i got from mod quad by 1/2 inch as it was way to long. as for the dyno.... felt that mine was running GREAT. did the tune & picked up 5.5 hp from it. it was totaly worth the $175 the guy worked on it for almost 3 hours. he got all there was to get out of it & the ap works perfect. just my 2 cents.
