Default 2000 DS650 starting problem

I have a 2000 DS650 with a starting problem. I have changed the spark plugs because I didn't have fire with the old ones. Now I have fire and fuel. The bikes starts but will only run when we have the start button pushed in. We ran it a couple time for a couple seconds and reved it up a little bit with the start button pushed in and everything seems to be running fine. But when you let go of the button it dies. I was going to try and feed straight voltage to my coils to see if that would make it run. If that works I'm lost after that. I don't know what controls my coils after its started. Is it the cdi? I am at a lost after that. The bike has some miles on it and appears to be all stock from what I can tell. I have tested the trigger coils and it seems good. Thanks in advance to whom ever helps me out...its not exactly my bike...its my little bros bike and I would like to see him ride it and enjoy it!

Most likely a bad battery.

Did you replace the CDI Yet? The 2 things that can cause this are a faulty CDI box, and a short in the wiring...
