Default DS650 Snuffing/Sputtering at low RPM

Greetings all!!

I bought a 2003 DS650 and love it! Its the perfect quad for my size(285lbs) while staying in a sport quad riding style.

Its in amazing shape and runs great, but I am having an issue with it 'Snuffing' when its under load in 1st and 2nd gear at low RPM's.
If i let it bring up the RPM not under load it responds fine, however if i crack on it on a flat, or at the bottom of a ditch, it really hesitates and sputters and i have to feather the throttle to get the RPM up. It really gets up and goes in every gear, and does not backfire, it idles really smoothly, and hits full speed just fine. The plugs are burning clean and are brand new, and it behaves the same with new or old plugs. It is bone stock other than a clean K&N air filter.

It starts fine, dont even need choke. Im not sure what other ground I need to cover in terms of details.

I have not torn down the carb yet either to find the jet sizes , but have ordered a Jet kit because it came from Edmonton which is a lower altitude than Hinton which is where I live. The elevation in Hinton is 3300 ft above sea level. If anyone knows the proper jetting for that elevation i would aprreciate some input.

I know this is a long post, but i wanted to get my foot in the door on a pleasant side!

If anyone can offer me some advice, this would be great!!

Also, if this post is not in the proper area, i would not be opposed to the Mods moving it for me!

Thanks lots!! , Ian

Welcome to the forum Ian. Have you tried to half choke it and see if this remedies your issue? Sounds like not enough air and with your elevation it could very well be something so simple.

Once you figure it out be sure to do the OMR stock carb mods. You will be pleased with the outcome.

wow, thats a lot to take in lol. Im actually kinda stumped on what to do... I am going to re-read that post a couple times !! Can you suggest a "If it was you, what would you do' scenario please? I will let you know what tube the breather is, i can understand the need to change that. But toying with the carb, i get a bit lost TBH...

thanks man!

Well if it was me I would do the carb mod. I've probably done a dozen or so of them and it's not difficult. I've done a handful of Pedators also as they have the same carb. I ride all dune and desert so I have no airbox thus no snorkels but the mod worked well for me on many DS's until I strapped TM45's or Lectrons on them.

Did you try running at half choke yet? I would get the bike running properly first before doing any type of mod.
There are years and years of info on this forum so search for any questions that you may have and if you still are stumped then let us have it.

Honestly, no i havent tried it yet, my quad gets stored out of town in my buddies garage, and he was working today , but i imagine i will be going out there tomorrow, and i will try the half choke for sure.

I really do appreciate your help, id shake your hand if it were in person lol, id much rather advice from one knowledged person that works with me along the way than 20 different opinions confusing the heck out of me!

I do value input from anyone, but you are right , i think it will be a simple fix once i pinpoint it. Just a thought, do you think it could be any bad hoses or plugged screen? I didnt think so because it does run well, just that small hiccup at midrange.

I will keep you posted! THanks again Ace

Not sure if you have read my thread yet, but it describes somewhat the same problem except more severe in my case... Maybe some of the posts can give you pointers in the right direction?

I haven't had time recently to take much of a look at it, been busy with work and the rest of life, thus being at a standstill at the moment.

Best of luck figuring it out.

Ok guys, I finally got out to my quad, and tried the choke test-to no avail! It had very little effect on the problem,so i need to try some other things now. To be more specific, its actually doing the snuff/bogout in any gear, its all about the RPM's it would seem. I did order a jet so when it comes in, i will be pulling the carb off to clean it.I will make note of what setting the needle is on.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the jetting sizes @ 3300 ft ASL? I know that is the elevation we are sitting at here, and I just googled hwo far ASL Edmonton is, which is where i bought the quad, and it is a substantial difference-2200 ft ASL.

Advice?

@aceisback

I found the problem! It's air box intake! This weekend we were riding and i took the breather box lid off and presto, it came to life!!! All kinds of jam out of hole is first and second now.But now I need to investigate and find out out why its suffering for air with the airbox intact.
