K&N filter?
#1
Ok so i just ordered a K&N air filter and a K&N Pre-Filter from a local dealer (they dont even sell can-am's, he just said he could get me it in within a day, so i said what the hell.) The local can-am dealer is 45 minutes away and this place is about a 10 minute drive if traffic is bad, so not too far. Anyways its for my 2009 can-am renegade 500. I was going to get a UNI filter but i wanted the K&N's performance. I got the Pre-Filter because where i ride is usually pretty dusty. I was wondering if it was worth the extra chunk of change to get the K&N? And will the Pre-Filter affect the performance of the air-filter its self? I'm putting on a slip-on hmf exhaust with the spark arrester and quiet core, and a Dayco HPX high performance belt! Hope all this brings the renegade up in performance! Guess ill have to wait and see!
Thanks!
Thanks!

The Outerwear will not affect the K&N intake performance. It will filter out some of the finer particles of sand and dust but be sure to keep your filter well oiled. The oil is what helps trap the dirt in the fiber. The K&N allows better flow for a reason and it is not better filtration. Having owned nine DS650's over the years and having every type of build imaginable for them it took me some time and observation to come to the realization that there are better filters out there than K&N. K&N has the name recognition but in my experience the UNI and NoToil outperform the K&N in the cleaning side of things.
You should apply each of the mods that you mentioned one at a time in order to see what the benefits of each are. And also for the reason that if anything is amiss after installation you will know which item caused it and not have to do so much backtracking and troubleshooting. Also learned from experience!lol
Good luck with your build, you should be pleased.

Thank you for the help! And ya my dad was mad when i told him i ordered a K&N. He said "they will not out perform any other filter, you'll be able to tell NO difference in performance from your stock to this." I knew going into this that the K&N lets fine particles in like nothing, but that why i got the pre-filter as well. So that will take the blunt of the dirt/debris. I hope i can prove my dad wrong, it would make me will good im not going to lie haha.

I have a Renegade 800X and just got the K&N, prefilter, Big Gun exhaust, and a power commander. I've run the K&N's and UNI filters, both worked great, but with the UNI if i ruin it then its done, with the K&N if i ruin it i just take it off, clean it, oil it and put it back in, plus i got it for $40 on ebay, couldnt beat it!

K&N is a better choice because it can be cleaned and reused constantly where as the No-Toil and other brands have a short life span. However, it also depends on what type of riding you do. Also, I had a mice problem where the quad was stored and the K&N was the only filter they never destroyed.

K&N filters are great filter, we race two strokes and have tried the foam filters from most of the name brands. Uni, no toil, and a few others. We stay with k&n because they work and work well, and yep the outer wear is worth its weight in gold. As it does catch most of the larger particles before they get to the main filter and it is also water proof to avoid ingesting any water. In fact we run open air boxes and after we return from a race. We wash the bike without protecting the filter, then remove, clean and re oil as usual. Good luck

Ok, i ended up going with a Twin Air filter. Now, i am looking for a clutch kit. I have the stock tires/rims on it. Eventually i will put after market rims/tires on it but not for awhile. And when i do, they won't be too much bigger than the stock. anyways i am stuck between a Highlifter clutch kit and an EPI clutch kit.
Highlifter...
High Lifter Products - OUTLAW SUPER DUTY EXTREME CLUTCH KIT CAN-AM RENEGADE 500 08-10 (COMPLETE KIT WITH SPRINGS AND WEIGHTS)
EPI-
EPI: CAN-AM • 500 RENEGADE 4x4 08 • 500 RENEGADE EFI 4x4 09-11 • SPORT UTILITY
But with the EPI it says "designed for stock motor and stock exhaust". I have the stock motor, but not stock exhaust. I have an HMF slip on exhaust on it. Also i dont know if i should get the kit that is made for the stock wheels and tires, or the 27-28" tires because i will be eventually getting bigger tires/wheels but i wont be getting them that big (27-28"). Please help! Thanks!
