The indicator light is both a low oil pressure sensor and a coolant temperature sensor. I could be wrong, but I believe the indicator light might cycle from steady-on to steady-off every second or so if the coolant temperature gets too high. If it is low oil pressure I believe the indicator light either starts to flicker and eventually will be steady/full on if the pressure gets low enough.
The indicator light is nothing to take lightly!
The 2000 models (manufacturing date < June 2000) have been known to have bad oil pressure switches. This is a recall with a new part number for the oil pressure switch and was fixed in the 2001 model ((manufacturing date > June 2000). I ended up replacing the oil pressure switch myself by buying a BMW F650 part. Even with a good oil pressure switch, the light will flicker if the oil gets low or the oil has not been changed in a while, or if you are running too lean with elevated temperatures and near continuous fan running. If you changed the oil and didn't bleed the system properly this could be a problem also. If the fan is NEVER running then the DS will get too hot and the oil pressure will drop. Some of us have had fan problems.
I had air trapped in my cooling system and came close to an overheat.
