Question help me!

ok guys , bear with me im only 14 so help me out! i bought a ds650 2003 for 1200. when i got it, it ran okay for about 1 min and it started popping and backfires and had to push the throttle just a tad so it would go. the only mods are a stock completely gutted exhaust. ive looked around and most people say its jetting or a cdi box? if i go down the road with choke half on and go to where i do donuts it gets better and eventually it has full power but when i go home it does it all again. what do yall think, should i jet it and see what it does or get a cdi box. id appreciate all the help i can get

Can't find anything in your profile about where you're located or I'd say bring it on by and let's get her up and running. Could be several things but it's much easier to tell in person than it is over the internet.
I'll get back to you when the race is over...

As always, I'd start with a carb cleaning. If you just picked it up, it may have set for who knows how long before you bought it. After that either get an aftermarket exhaust and rejet, or find a used stocker to put on there. You really should add a bigger jet while cleaning the carb. It's simple to do and your already in the carb. They are like 3$ a piece. It will keep you from burning the engine up.

Maybe a clogged screen in the bottom of your gas tank.
