Default 05 outlander won't start

I have a 2005 outlander max sitting dead in my yard. When trying to start, even when hooked up to a battery charger, I only get what sounds like the starter trying. The engine isn't turning over. I get a "fail" message on the display. I disconnected the voltage regulator, and did replace it 2-3years ago. The bike sounds the same with the red kill switch in either position.

If the voltage regulator is bad, wouldn't unplugging it let the bike start and not send fail msg, or does having dc'ed send that msg also?

Looking for input before I start throwing random parts at it.

first make sure you have a good battery, should have 12.7 VDC.
