Normally the cooling fan should not come on when you crank one up especially at first crank up when cold. Usually when this happens a fan sensor has shorted out. Most sensors provide the ground path for the fan and when a certain temp has been reached, the sensor switch contacts touch and complete the circuit. The one on ebay shows to interchange with the Can Am part #715900095 and cheaper than the oem from Cheap Cycle Parts or the one listed on Amazon.Located on bottom right of the radiator. Can't find the correct compression, but I put a teaspoon of oil in spark plug hole and it went up to 150 psi..... so I guess that's a good indication of valves, rings, or something (right?)....

Check the valve clearance to eliminate this also. Compression will raise on most engines when you add oil to the cylinder. Not sure if you have some sort of compression release on the cam,but appears on the parts list to have a centrifugal device on the cam.Item#24.2004 Can-Am Outlander 400 XT 4 X 4 Cylinder Head | Cheap Cycle Parts but don't think it's an exhaust type detent that lowers compression like the one Polaris has on the Fugi 500 engine(55-90psi on average). One last thing you can try (after the valve clearance check) is a leak down test. If it's less than 20%,I'd spring for the carb kit and cross your fingers.120 psi is so so (kinda low imo,but could be that low if it's been sitting awhile and the rings are somewhat dry in the cylinder. I can't find an average or minimum your engine should show, don't know if the manual does or not..

Went to take it to a local shade tree mechanic yesterday....we roll it off the trailer and go to crank it so he can see what it's doing, and click..click... Now it appears the starter has gone out on me Gonna see about replacing that, and then starting from scratch on the rest of it.....

Got new starter, put it on (was an easy install). It does seem to turn over better, and I got it to start and run... I have to keep the throttle wide open.
I took a video (sorry for the sloppy camera work, I was having to start it, throttle it, and try and video it myself If you go to about 30 seconds you can hear it running...
Any ideas here ? Seems like it is a fuel problem, carb rebuild...? Or timing off ?

Fuel is shooting out back of the carb.. Could be low compression/valves? Did you ever check the valve clearance also? Install the air box and see how it does. Most don't run worth a flip with out them.

Not sure how to check the valve clearance. I'll do some searches and try and figure it out. Thanks again.

Valve clearance looked good.... I'm thinking about throwing in the towel and bringing it to a dealership to get it checked out.
