Major bug found:

Large intercooler, large diameter intercooler pipes, and lack of plenum near throttle body was robbing power and throttle response. There was excessive pressure drop through the intercooler setup. There was choking of the motor due to lack of plenum. The cylinder fill efficiency was worse than stock. The turbo was not operating at peak efficiency due to the above.

Solution:

Feed compressor outlet through narrower pipes as short as possible into a 4X cylinder volume plenum as close to the throttle body as possible. Use large diameter short pipe between plenum and throttle body. Aluminum plenum is 3D tappered and sits above the rear shock bolt. The pipe between the plenum and 46mm throttle body is 3" diameter.

Results:

Major boost in power and throttle response! 22x11x10 10 paddle haulers were ripped up after a few drag races. Frontend comes up in any gear and carries to rev limit w/17 tooth front sprocket. Almost flipped the DS several times. Cannot shift fast enough. Power estimated in 80HP range at around 12psi. Could compete with some extended swingarm banshees and modified quadzillas. Turbo seems to be operating more efficiently - charge air temperature is down.

Still need to work out some other issues...

Scooby- were you at little sahara over the week-end? Have you ever ran that beast on the race track?Me and some of my friends ran our raptors at cedar creek dragstrip a couple of weeks ago. It was a 100 miles from our house. Someone said they have a drag strip in denton, tx. that quads can run on, do you know? I would like to see you run your ds.

It's great to hear that your getting the bugs worked out Scooby! I knew that thing had the potential to whoop ash. Sounds like Jeffinrivercity's, Hemi's and yours are the ultimate HP DS's going. It would be increadable to see all 3 shoot it out some day. I do believe I could get a magazine intrested if the 3 of you wanted to get together some day.

mudmunster,

He got that kit as a custom 1 or 2 off kinda deal. He's spent an amazing amount of time making it work right. I think we should throw him a huge party for finally getting it working right (or well on the road to that.) If you wanna buy one, ask him nicely and maybe he'll make you one based on his. After he gets all of his R&D work done on his own he probably could sell them very easily.

14mins, Yes I was at Little Sahara on Sunday. Where is cedar creek drag strip? I heard there was a drag strip somewhere north of Ft. Worth that quads have run at. Not sure if it was Denton, Decatur, Sanger, etc.

mudmunster, The turbo setup is custom made out of Utah. There is not a complete "kit" that can be bought, only certain parts. The cost was very high due to the EFI and the fact that everything was hand made, not to mention the fact the guy was not motivated to build this second prototype without a litttle more incentive $$$. If you wanted to build your own it could be done with a few grand. The turbo itself is the only weight adder and is light, maybe around 20lbs, plus a few pipes, but nothing significant.

Knutz, Certain magazines weren't too interested back in April. One magazine is though and has been waiting for me to finish. The shootout you descibed would be interesting, but we'd all like to have the same extended swingarm. Jeffinrivercity's is combining the 760 w/Nitrous on his DS so that unlevels the playing field though.

650MANIAC, I'm not sure yet if I'll make it on the Saturday of that weekend. It depends on how the DS is running this weekend. I ordered new aggressive tires, so I'd like to try them out that weekend.

Scooby, I've learned that the magazines prefer to do features on quads that come from shops, so the readers can have similar quads built if they like it. Readers quads often times get overlooked even if they are very nice[like yours]. I'm currently building a couple of motors that will be even stronger than Jeffinrivercity's.

I realize that jeff is going to have the 760 and nitrous, but you have the turbo and methanol. That would sort of re-level the playing field. And then add in the fuel injection that you have, it gives you a slight tech advantage.

No worries, it's not like we are competeing against eachother[unless you start to market those turbos], but it would be great to show the country that the DS can be built to an increadable level the way Banshee's are.
