me and some friends went out rideing last weekend and i flipped the ds on it lid. we fixed the handle bars and went rideing again it ran fine that day. the next morning we started up and went for a ride the bike was makeing a knocking sound. i killed it and pulled it back to camp. i took it to the shop because the oil was watery we emptyed the oil from the motor and found cooper shaveings. what do you think is the problem? please help.

It $ounds like you lost a rod bearing which are brass I think. $ince the motor will have to be torn down and inspected you might as well send it to Knutz for a 703 kit with cams.
What may have happened is this, when you flipped your quad, you trapped a pocket of air in the intake oil line and caused the pump to cavitate (or suck air). No oil pressure, no rod bearing. Later D$s solved this by having a vent line right where the oil intake line goes into the motor. I don't get the watery oil, that's from a blown head gasket or the water pump seal. The camshafts might also be damaged from a lack of oil. How long did you ride after you flipped the bike back over?

the oil light did not come on till the next day when we hear the sound. i just got off the phone with knutz he said it was the rod bearing maybe by the way it sounded.on the 2001 ds650 there is a small hose that come off of the oil tank and goes to the back of the motor. we think this solves this problem. but we do not know if more is needed to fix this problem. so don't flip the 2000 ds O.K.

JSsDs,
I think you would have weld a nipple into the oil tank,or replace the tank with the newer model tank. Then order the fitting down below,or tap and tread a nipple into the existing fitting.Hardly worth it,just keep in mind when you flip it.....Maybe look into oil tank when the motor is running to see if the system is circulating oil before you go riding.

Usually after turning it back over (a ball busting experience) I let it sit for a while. 1. to let the oil drain back and settle and 2. (and most importantly) to assess the damage...mostly to myself.
I was wondering if the added hose was to help the trapped air to escape or if it was to stop the oil from blowing out the overflow as I've heard it does on some DSs. In any case I have not had any problems with oil pressure after flipping it over.
Maybe guardinangels problem was caused by the water he found in the oil. If he drained the water from the engine case and not the reservoir then the crank would have been sitting in it over night and rusted the lower pin. Just one theory.

Jeffnrivercity, couldn't you just put a t into the existing ventline at the top of the oil tank?.
One of my friends rolled his DS (2000) and the oil light wouldn't go out. We had to break loose the oil bleed screw out in the dunes. I used a big screwdriver, vise grips and had to shoot it with ether to shrink it because it had never been loosened before. Now I just carry a special tool just in case it happens to me.
Guardianangel,I hope your getting a good tax return because it sounds expensive no matter what the cause.
