Hello everyone, I'm new to this list and also just returning to this sport. I just brought home a new 2002 DS 650 Baja. Like everything else I buy, I can't leave well enough alone. I just recieved from Rocky Mountain ATV Supply a Gig Gun exhaust, K&N Filter with outerwear and a Dynojet kit. I'm not a "hell bent" rider (at fourty three years old, things break to easy LOL) So I'm not going to go to crazy with the mods but my question is, ignition? I understand the Ron Woods Racing Ignition Amplifiler Box is a worth while investment. Does this make a "seat of the pants" improvment and is the fact that it removes the rev limiter a concern? Thx all and after reading a number of posts here, I'm glad I found you folks, ride safe all, Rich A

Welcome and you picked a great bike.

I just put on my big gun and dynojet kit. I like the way it runs.

The rev box, will probably be a concern after you start riding this bike. I find I bounce off mine real easy now. I too am in the market. Noone makes a box that will just plug into the baja yet. I am trying to find one also.

I really like my baja and hope you do to.

Thx for the info Bat
Yes your right, I did alittle research after posting my question and yes, no plug-in module for the Baja yet. I'll let you know if i hear anything either. I just recieved my exhaust, ten minutes ago acually. Anything I should watch for while installing them? The instrutions say to use high temp silicone to seal everything up, boy I'm glad I didn't have to use any of that stuff while installing the pipes on either Harley. Also, can you share what jetting worked best for you, I appeciate the help, thx, Rich A

puttnutt, I really don't have any tips, the hardest part of the pipe install was removing the old pipe. Those springs were on there and hard for me to get my big hands in there to get them off. I used a screwdriver and kind of pryed them off.

It was a pretty easy install. I used the black high temp silicone and I just put a real thin layer inside the exhaust port and again a thin layer inside the exhaust pipe where the header slips in.

I am not sure, they sent me two rubber grommet things. I am not exactly sure how or where they are to go on. I put one on each of the two rear bolts. They did not say in the instructions, so I made my best guess. It seems to work. The bike runs real good. Let me know where you put the rubber grommets at. I don't have a digi cam , so I cant take any pics. But if you do, would you mind taking some pics and letting me see how the two rear bolts mount on yours.

Anway, I did the dynojet kit and it was easy, except I stripped the heads off of two of the carb screws. I think they are made out of butter, they strip so easily. I did a search and found the size for the carb bolts. I ended up replacing all four of the carb bowl screws and the two screws on top where the vacuum diaphram thing is. The screws for the bowl are 4mmX10mm and you need three of these and then you need one of these 4mmX12mm. The longer one is for where the idle bracket goes.

I don't remember the size of the bolts for the top, but I just took one of the screw into the store and found a nut that fit it, then I found a bolt that would work.

I bought all allen head screws, because they are so much easier to remove.

I did not do the K&N filter yet, but my bike runs real good. I hope some of this info helped you out.

Bat, Where did you find those srews at? I looked all over but maybe they were out. I went through about 15 of those little suckers while I was in the process of getting it dialed in. I bought replacement ones at Wild West but they were the same buttery screws. I even had to cut slots in a few with the Dremel tool to get them out with a flathead. What a pain. I have wanted some Torx or Allen head screws forever. I also wanted to tell you that if you are still looking at oil, I went to the Honda shop today and got some chain lube and they have that oil Knutz uses. Ask for Rich and tell him I sent ya, he is my cousin and would hook ya up right on the price. Just thought I would let you know.

PuttNutt, When you do the combination of filter, pipe and the CDI, The DS ROCKS!!! It does make a huge difference, There are ways to put the current boxes available on the Baja, Just remove the pins and put them in the other connecters, Be careful of the right wires being connected. I think I saw Jeffinrivercity or whatever it is, post a wire connecting chart in one of the other posts. It is way worth it.

demon, I found them at ace, but they are not in the isle, with the other nuts, bolts and screws. They are on the wall over by where they cut keys, kind of in the back corner of the store and they are in some little plastic drawers. I found them there. They had plenty of them and if you like I could pick some up for you. I think the allen screws were like sixty nine cents apeice.

I think I know Rich also. I am debating still on what oil to use. I do trust what knutz has to say though.

On the cdi, I am not worried about switching out the wires, I just am not sure if I could find the connector around here, or if I would have to try and track one down. I am also not sure whether or not to go with ron wood or the team pami. If I could find a dealer that would send me the connector, they would have a sale today. I tried to email knutz, but the email did not go through. I am going to try again.

Let me know on the allen screws. I am in ace all the time for work.

On another note, are you going to be doing any riding soon. I want to bad. My wife was trying to talk me into little sahara this weekend, but we would of had to camp one night and I think it is still a little cold to camp down there. I am debating about presidents weekend.

Talk at you later

Bat, If you could get me some of those screws I would definatly appreciate it. I never looked over in that area for them. As far as riding goes I was thinking about going Saturday but not sure. I have my daughter this weekend and it is hard to go with her. I was hopeing my bro was off because his wife would come and I could take turns riding and watching the kiddo with her. I know what you mean about wanting to ride, I have the bug so bad I can hardly stand it. I know this is a stupid question, but when is Presidents day? I don't have a 2002 calander yet, can you beleive that? If I am open daughter wise that weekend, count me in for at least Sat and Sun. If not I could still go for probably one day and leave her with my cousins in Layton. I would just meet you there or whatever. Anyways let me know.

Bat, Me again, I just went out and got my stock CDI and played with the connector and the Baja connector is the same kind, just not the same case. We could use the case off your stock one and put it on the Pami or RWR one and boom, your good to go. I could do it in about 5 min and it would be as good as from the factory. I was a copier repairman for 5 years so I deffinatly know how to fix and prepair plugs of all sorts for use. I would say order it. No worries what so ever. I would be glad to do it for you. Just trying to help. Let me know.

Demon, I will grab them for you tommorow, if you still have my number give me a call and I can get them to you.

Presidents weekend is Feb 16,17 and 18th. If I end up planning to go I will let you know. I would be up for a little riding on the weekend if you do go let me know. I could meet you wherever you ride at.

I never thought about the other end of the plug. That would work pretty easy. I think I will order one and then get it wired in. I will take you up on the help hooking it up. I am still not sure what cdi to get. I am leaning toward the pami, mainly because knutz seems to really know what he is talking about and he has offered me free advice on several issues.

I will talk to you soon.

Bat
