Hey guys~

82.6 mph with a stock engine/gearing and 22/23" tires! This was on a frozen lake with a Magellan 315 GPS and about a 5-10 mph wind at my back. I did a total of 20 runs yesterday and every run gave me atleast 79 mph with 17 runs over 80 mph. Now I have a question...Would the DS pull the 22/23" tires with a 17 tooth sprocket in 5th gear? I know this isn't really necessary, but I really do enjoy hanging right with my friend's Polaris Indy 500 on the lakes! Right now, he slowly inches away from me at top speed, but still gets there much quicker due to better traction. My goal for next winter will be a 90 mph DS with only a pipe, clamp on air K&N, and a CDI box. Think this is possible? Oh yeah, I have about 2 miles to reach this speed on the lake where I do my testing.

Hello, just for your information when my ds was bone stock I put on a 17 tooth front sprocket. I found that it would still nudge the rev limiter if I tucked down, and not hit the limiter if I didn't. This was only after 10 hours of break in time (I hear they get faster). However, my tires were stock. My friend's baja has 200 more revs allowed by the cdi box and he was not touching the limiter with his stock except for the 17 tooth front. Hope that helps. I haven't riden it yet with the new mods as I broke my ankle badly from a motorcycle accident.

I would think if you put a pipe, Dyno jet stage 3, and a K&N airfilter you should have no problems pulling that gearing. According to the baja 2000 winners, they were reaching speeds over a hundred(dry lake beds) with a stock engine and their bolts ons.Good luck.

WIscrambler, that's hauling. More than I thought you'd get with a stock machine. I don't have a DS (thinking about it though) but If I had to guess, I would say that it may be tough to hit the rev limiter with a 17 tooth but that's just my guess.

By way of comparison on my Banshee when it was stock it hit 72 MPH, added a K&N/Reeds and got 74 MPH. Put on Toomey pipes and hit 82.0 MPH. Bumped the front sprocket up 1 tooth from stock and hit 84.0 MPH... Basically, I was rapping out the engine to hit 82 with stock gearing and not able to rev all the way out with the larger front sprocket when I hit 84. These were measuered with a Garmin GPS III on a flat paved road by the way.

Thanks for the post, I always like seeing peoples speeds when measured by GPS. I don't rely on the ones that were measured with Cousin Cletus following somebody in his 1966 Chevy truck.

WyoDuner~
Thanks for the comparison with the Banshee. When my DS was bone stock, including tires, I would easily hit the rev limiter about 75mph. With the 2" bigger tires and one tooth smaller sprocket, I would still easily hit the limiter, but now about 76.5mph. Now with the stock gearing and 22" tires, it's at 82.6 mph. That is just about at the Rev limiter because I checked it with MarkyNark's speed calculator. 5th gear at 7700rpm's should be right at 83 mph. I am guessing it will have a hard time hitting the limiter with a 17 tooth sprocket, but I promise you I will still try. I should have my tachometer within a month, so that will tell me how close I actually am to the limiter.

The DS that won the baja2000 had a stock motor, except for pipe and air mods, 22" rear tires, and different gearing to achieve over 100mph. If you search the net for articles on this race, you will come across an article that will confirm this, no kidding.

The Baja 2000 bike also had to have a clutch replaced, no doubt from running gearing that was too tall with bigger than stock tires. They were probably abusing the hell out of that clutch to get the bike to move. But this is also 2000 miles of hell that you're not going to find running down a frozen lake either, just a counterpoint.

This has come up in the past, I've been reading these stories for a while. When I picked up my pipe for my DS at CT Racing, I was talking to the owner there and he couldn't believe that anyone would suggest that bike had the capabilities of running over 100 mph with just the pipe and the CT tuned jetting on the carb. He was looking for the dyno runs from the bike when I was there but wasn't able to find them. The gearing that the DS would have to run to hit the speeds vs. the wind resistance of a quad just doesn't add up. The horsepower just isn't there. The gearing that they ran had the possibility of running that speed, but unless the dry lake bed was downhill and 50 mph winds, I just don't see how that would be possible. I wonder if the Team Pami kit 760 without Nos would have enough power of reaching the 105 mark. Plus if you look at MarkyNark's website, he has the drag bike that runs the 1/4 mile WITH NOS and a stage III Ron Woods kit and he would probably have a hard time of reaching the 105 and that quad is set up to reach max speed quickly. Running a Baja 2000, you aren't going to set up a bike to reach 105 flat out. You are more interested in the reliableness that the DS has. It didn't win the race cause it was the fastest bike in the race but because it was the most reliable and consistant bike in the race. Endurance races are won by the person with the least problems. They may have chosen the gearing that they did for the best mileage and the sweet spot of the motor when running, but 105??? Very doubtful.

WIscrambler, when I had a RWR stage 2 I used to run a 17/37 set up out in the desert and it would pull through 5th gear no problem. And acording to the two dyno runs I had done that thing didn't make a hell of a lot more horsepower than a stock DS.

I'm running the following setup your talking about. Ron Woods CDI,
K&N Clamp-on, 23 X 22 Holeshots, 17-37 gearing and Big Gun Race Exhaust w/ stock carb and 175 main jet.
This combination has no problem pulling the 17-37 gears and of course, I have no Rev Limiter to hit.
I recently had it topped out in 5th on a smooth section of fire road and it was scary fast! I'm not sure how fast, but it's got to be in the high 80's to low 90's. You should have no trouble topping out in your two mile distance.
