DS hour meter trick
#1
This is for electrically inclined who want an hour meter on their DS that will only count when the motor is running.
I've installed several hour meters on other machines, and always used the stator output for the hour meter voltage source. This way it only counts when the stator is turning, which only turns when the motor is running.
On the DS it seems that the regulator allows battery voltage through to the stator output wires, so there is always voltage whether the motor is running or not. The meter will count, even with the key off.
To have an hour meter that will only count when the motor is running:
1) Get a small miniature relay with normally closed contacts.
2) Run power from the ignition switch through the normally closed contacts to the hour meter.
3) Tap into the wire that comes from the oil pressure sending unit to the red warning light, and use this source for the relay coil.
When the motor is running the meter will count. When the motor is killed, power from the oil pressure sending unit will pull open the contacts of the relay and kill the meter. When the key is shut off, the oil pressure sending unit power is cut off, so the contacts will then close again, but the power you ran from the ignition switch through those contacts will be cut as well.
