ouch man, that hurts. It looks like some money there.

Can I ask you a question?

When you installed the piston, did you have them hone the cylinder?

Thanks

If you look at the pics you can see that the oil ring is the only ring that is missing. I think that the oil ring failed and when I pulled the crank case breather it had a water/ oil mixture in it that could have caused a ventilation problem.? Or could have using the "old" rings on a new piston caused this? If you think about it, the rings could have been fatigued from being removed and re-installed.?

You did'nt buy new rings?!?! Whats a few more dollars? I've replaced pistons before and ALWAYS use new rings.

This brings up some interesting points, which I am very interested in finding out the answers.

Pro, I am sure it was not a matter of the money, but Don recomends that you use the factory rings. He does this because if you use new rings you should hone the cylinder to have a new fresh surface for them the rings to seat. If you hone this cylinder, you remove some of the nikasil coating and therefore could remove too much and loose some compression and could also get into the aluminum cylinder which would not be good.

I am no expert on these engines, but I am very curious about this and would like to here everyones opinions, especially those that have replaced the piston on these machines.

I agree I have built other engines and always replaced the rings with the piston, but none of those were nikasiled cylinders.

I am going to email knutz also to see what he says about the possible situation.

Of course the oil ring failing could have been secondary to whatever caused all this.

I feel for you and hope you can find out what actually happened.

That is catastrophic!
I don't think it could get any worse.................sorry man!
Can't beleive you broke the cylinder,if I still had my old one I would send it to ya,but gave it to Knutz.

Wish you luck
Jeff

Did anyone ever hear of a wrist pin failing? The piston hit the head hard and the wrist pin is broken in half. The back half of the piston is in the crank case and the motor is still frozen.

Wow did the nitrous do that? Was it the main cause? HOw can I stop it from happeneding to me? You had a forged piston and it still failed.

man i really feel bad for you.... you can still use your cylinder, mine was bored out and an iron liner was installed with no nikisil. you can make it 105mm with a stock stroke
and get 719cc like mine is. well i hope you get it back together soon , sorry it happened, dont give up on the nitrous though.
