I have a 2001 ds650, alba pipe, RWR cdi. k&n on the carb. And i am running a 172.5 main at about 2500 feet. My prob is I am geting spanked by my frends quads it is getting old now. One is a lt50 with a pipe and delta valve. The other is a 250r with a pipe and mild porting. Both the people are lighter than me by about 70 lb. I can get both of them off the line but by the time i get into 3rd gear thay are walking by me the lt500 is the worse I want to just through a rope on it and let it pull me faster... I also have changet the front sprocket several times from a 15 to a 17 and there is no noticable diff. O I am running 22in holeshots to.. pleas let me know what you think i should do. carb, piston, cam's,porting,I will do NOS is that is what it takes......

If you haven't done this yet, try moving your needle jet clip to the bottom(last) position or last notch.(notch closest to sharp end of needle) I think you will be pleasantly surprised! It really wakes up the stock machine! Then adjust the gearing.

Nothing really sounds wrong. First your giving up ALOT of weight, then your racing A modded LT500 with a Modded DS650, The LT500 will win everytime. My advice, CALL KNUTZ!! tell him what you want to outrun, and he will tell you what you need and how much.
P.S. the 250 sounds highly modded,so that makes since also. And I bet if you raced them both in the sand it would probably be 1st(LT) Close 2nd(DS) and 3rd(R). Sand sucks alot of power. and the DS has a torque advantage over the 250r.
Biggerisbetter.
P.S. I'm guessing that your giving up a total of 140lbs to you buddies, so have them haul about 3 bags of CONCRETE on their quads and race them again.FOR CASH!!!

DSWOLF, raising the needle(lowering the e-clip) increases or richens the flow of fuel in midrange circuit for the 1/4 to 3/4 throttle or so. This is, in my opinion, the meat of the powerband. The main jet controls the 3/4 to full throttle range. Most everyone that I know, with the stock carb, along with adding an aftermarket filter/exhaust and larger main stock mikuni jet raise the needle to the bottom clip position. When you flow more air aftermarket filter/exhaust, you need to flow more fuel. I think the 1/4 to 3/4 range is where you will really notice the difference. Lowering the needle leans the 1/4 to 3/4 circuit. Dynojet kits have their own jet needle/clip settings and their main jets are different, so following their directions works pretty well if you go that route.

One more thing Buttfungus you told dschris to move is needle up and then play whit is gearing if i leave the gearing stock and move my needle all the way up how is it gonna wake up my ds i mean is it going to improve the bottom end, midrange or top end.
