My brother in law said it is ok to upshift without the clutch but you definitely need to use it when downshifting. Whats the word on this??

Can't wait to see Jeff's post on this one.

Do a search on Tranny and you will probably find something. I think Jeff even has some pictures posted at Extreme Garage if I remember right.

Make sure your brother in-law puts it in writing.

Jeff has a automatic in his, he doesn't believe in clutches!!!using one would only slow him down.

Thanks for the warning.

Exactly what part broke? If it was syncros and such then it makes sense.

If it was the gears then that has more to do with too much power and too much traction, not shifting.

I upshift with no clutch all the time and have had no problems

You cannot upshift a DS without using the clutch. You can downshift with no clutch, as long as you're not under load. If you upshift a DS with no clutch, you will be replacing the shift forks - this is what breaks. I grew up on Hondas - you can upshift all you want with no clutch, but not a DS. The transmission is not built the same - don't do it - or you will lose the forks.
