Modified tank cover??
#1
Instead of raising the bar mount all the way to the moon so aftermarket bars clear the tank cover, I sure wish somebody would come out with an aftermarket tank cover made to accomidate bars!!! They barely rub, it just needs indented on each side a little bit where the first curve in the bar touches!
It sure would be sweet if the IMS tanks had this in mind - they could've been designed to accomidate bars, but I'm told they still won't clear it. I haven't seen one in person, if somebody knows otherwise then let me know. I like the ride height of my Tag's the way they are, I don't want to raise them, but the cosmetic effect of scarring on my tank cover where they rub pisses me of too...

I only have a 1/2 inch spacer on the bar clamp. It dose not feel bad at all you cant really feel a 1/2 inch, but i use pro taper bars and there not real high to begin with compared to other bars. Good idea though, thats if the price would be reasonable for a aftermarket tank cover.

I tried a 1/2" on mine, but was a bit more than I liked, it also brings them back closer to the seat too. I'm sure I'd get used to it in no time, but then I also had the cosmetic issue of the black plastic cover not being long enough to conceal the spacer.
It seems like the carbon fiber covers are around $200, so I figure an aftermarket plastic cover in any color should be around $50, if somebody like Maier or Full Bore made it.
I should've got the pro-tapers that you have! I think I'd be happier with them....

Not a bad idea MXZ - do you think it will retain its gloss afterwards? I could probably sand and polish the year's worth of scarring off, and try it. Hell, even if it doesn't look perfect it won't be any worse than it is already anyway. The scarring isn't really bad, which is why I didn't let it bother me for the past year, but I'm ready for all the little details to be right now. No more sloppy crap. I'll give it w try this week.

I guess it matters how you heat it, if you use a torch it probably will lose some but I bet with some polish it would not look bad. If you dont care how long it takes you could use a blow dryer.
I would try the hair dryer first, probably get the best results.

I have a heat gun, like an industrial blow-dryer, and I've used it to curve and shape tank scoops on bikes and 3-wheelers, so I'll give that a try. I think I'll take the cover off the tank and heat it from the back side, so If I get too close and scorch it it won't show.
thanks Smitty, and MXZ.
