After being out on my Baja about 10 times to various places in the so. cal ie Hungry Valley, Dumont,Glamis,and Jawbone Cyn. and kicking *** on some dirt bikes in deep sand other novice atv riders still novice myself, I'am still damn aprehensive about hill climbing big *** steep hills, like 400 ft. plus desert walls with no way to simply turn around and go back down. Unlike a dirt bike, which eiter you flip it over, or lay it down and bull dog the sucker back down the cliff/hill. Now is there anything or any strategy one can do when you know your not going to make the top of the hill, other than try to lock parking brake,or just get off and watch $7000.00 dollars of beutiful machinery cartwheel down the hill and check the balance of your check book for major repair?

Here in PA we ride the coal slag hills (like cinders/gravel), when we cant turn out on the hill we lean forward and stab the gas to dig in with the back wheels. hasnt failed me yet, getting off is a pain and I rip my pants alot though. Then once were off its easy to drag the front end around since the back wheels hold.

If you have to back down, stop the quad from any forward momentum, place the quad in neutral and bend your left leg to where it is on the seat (foot to the grab rail, in a kneeling position) and you are standing on the right foot peg. Use your rear break to slow you but remember, the quad will easily flip over so feather it lightly. If you need to get away from the quad jump to the right (this is why you are up off your butt.) Your front brakes won't help to slow you down much unless you put a lot of weight forward.

behind my house there is a hill about 50' and i tired climbing it was it was really muddy about 2' from the top and it started spining, so i grabed both brakes, i used alot of the front brake and a lil of the back, i just backed down slowly, i've also done this on my old suzuki lt185, it only had back brakes and half the time they didn't work, not fun rolling backs that fast,

He said no way of simply turning around, he didn't say there was no room to turn around. The u-turn will do the trick, it takes very little room once you can do it really good. I also agree with spinning the rear tires into the ground and locking the front brakes. Just take your time and work on small hills, practice stopping on the hill and working it down, practice your u-turns.

If you are not going to make it, simply let your quad dig itself in. this will take the PANIC factor out of the situation. Next, All you have to do is put it in neutral, holding the front brakes(not tightly,you still need to steer in reverse) ,use the REAR brakes for stopping. The rear brakes work excellent, as long as you dont let the quad gain to much momentum. Just tap on them every few feet to maintain control, then as you get closer to the bottom, let it roll fast to get you out a little ways from the bottom of the dune so that you can take back off without digging yourself in a hole and haveing to get off the quad and lift your rear-end up and out.(embarrassing)
Also it is prefered to shut the engine off after shifting it into neutral, this will allow you to concentrate, and will keep the engine from over-heating(it may take you a bit to reach the bottom).
This proccess should keep you from never haveing to get off the seat.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
