Default Help - Axle Removal

Howdy all,
I'm trying to take my rear axle off the '00 DS (it was bent a coupld rides ago and need to get it repaired or replaced). I was able to get the hubs, sprocket (just the sprocket itself, not the hub on the axle) and the locking nut (plus the ring and circlip that is next to it) off the axle, but I can't get the rest of the stuff off to slide the axle out of the carrier. It's kinda like the old monkey trap. -----|ooo|----- Anyone have a neat trick for sliding getting the brake rotor assembly past where the locking nut was, or unfreezing the sprocket hub? HELP!!!! I'm going to Glamis in two weeks and it's going to be a pain in the neck to push up comp...especially with no rear-end!

Thanks in advance

I used a rubber mallet and tapped it aginst the rotor as i spun the rotor after each hit. Little by little it slid off. Don't know if there is an easier way or not. But it worked like a charm and I didn't bend the rotor at all. I was carefull of that.

NeoSirfir,
The brake rotor assembly/hub can be a real pain...seems to be the o-ring that holds it up..like eaglecollector said tap/pound & twist will do it...also some WD40 and some air pressure to get sand or other debri out helps....then once off ,(looking at it from the back) everything slides the right.
If you want the sprocket hub off..you are going to have to earn it! I took mine off once to chrome it..... was hardly worth it..that baby was on there.Pound, pound, pound!!Unless you have a press.
Jeff

Thanks for the tips...I'll give it a whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack and see what happens.

Later,

Default Help - Axle Removal

Okay folks, check the time stamp...8:47p to 11:10p finally got the rotor off as suggested (what a pain that little o-ring is) and then the snap ring that holds the bearing carrier on, slid everything to the right and voila...it was free. That wasn't too bad, only 30 minutes...the rest of the time was separating the carrier from the axle and then cleaning the components, bearing seals, bearings, carrier, etc.... ready for the alignment shop (hope they can actually do something with it!). I wasn't able to get the sprocket hub off, seems like it had more will to live than I did tonight, so it won, but I got the axle down to only those two pieces...so it should be okay. .... So success, thanks to the Jeff and Eaglecollector for responding...this is a great forum!

On a side note, if the shop isn't able to straighten the axle, anyone recommend the durablue, or other aftermarket axle for the DS? I've heard/read that the DS axle is one of the beefiest in the industry ... (I would have to say I agree after wrestling with it for a while tonight.)so I'm not sure if an aftermarket will be stronger?

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?
