Axle Nut Question (for those with "the book")
#1
From the rear (DS650), there is an adjustment nut (LARGE) with a locking clamp on it.
WHat is the side to side play of the axle supposed to be (if any) ?
Mine is about 1/4". I noticed it after I heard some clicking while leaning side to side.
Isn't this thing supposed to be torqued relatively tight? (e.g. no play)
Not sure.
Anyone have the answer?
I've ordered the book, but it's not in til Wednesday!
Thanks for any help you can offer.

the quad has about 5 hours on it. I'm sure it came loose during my last outing (with I rolled it).
I'll take it apart to check for wear and dirt, just to be sure.
Thanks,
T

i had the same problem with my 400EX. i, being a dumbbutt, turned the locking nut to teh right, instead of left, loosening it...so i had taken it out riding, and i heard a sqweek coming from the axle housing.(at first i thought it was the clutch, but it wasnt ,,,thank god) well anyway, my bearings and seals were completely screwed, so i ordered a new set. in fact, i just got them today, put it back together, and rode it around the lawn for a bit.
on to your question, there isnt supposed to be any play in the axle...im still not sure how there could be 1\4" of side-to-side play in it, cuz, like mine, the brake rotor would rub up against the brake pads...that may have been the clicking noise you heard..

Mine loosened up in the first 5 hours too. I got lucky no sand in the bearings so I didn't have to leave it at the dealer for repair.
Actually it kept lossening up until ultimately I had to grind a little out of the slit in the nut(where the bolt goes through and closes it like a clam) so it would tighten down better against the threads. The ends of the slit touched before it tightened.
I havn't had a problem since.
