Who has it??

What are the pros and cons of using this gearing? Does it give low end, or top?? Any info would be great!!

That gearing would have good top end speed, but take longer getting there. Holeshots would be lost so its not for the drag, but wide open flats and desert would be killer fun. Woods trails wood suck for loss in low end. Just depends on where you ride. It would be no good for dunes, you'd never see 5th gear, and steep hillclimbs would rob your ponys.
I ran 17/40 for a while while I had the stock dominators and factory cdi, but once I got real tires that work I realized that even this was geared too high for my riding. I'm fond of 15/40 for all around woods trails, sand, and drags, all with 20" tires.

i think dsmike runs 18 38 or 35 and seems to like it well, but it would have to be unreal fast on top. but i think he uses it for sand drags

I am pretty much just a sand rider, so I guess that wouldn't be a good setup for me. I messed around on Marky's gearing calculator, and this is what I came up with(sorry for being long):

With stock 7900rpm Baja Rev limit:

16-40 20in tires = 77.4mph
16-40 22in tires =85.15mph
15-40 20in tires =72.57mph
15-40 22in tires =79.8mph
17-38 20in tires =86.5mph
17-38 22in tires =95.23mph

With a new CDI box at 8500RPM:

16-40 20in tires =83.3mph
16-40 22in tires =91.6mph
15-40 20in tires =78mph
15-40 22in tires =85.89mph
17-38 20in tires =93.15mph
17-38 22in tires =102.4mph

So, for a person that mostly dunes, and needs good holeshots and decent top end the 15-40 combo with 22in tires would be the best??? It looks like stock gearing is going to give the best holeshot though...???

Anyone running the 14/40 with 22" paddles/tires? Is there any problems with this combo? stress on the counter sprocket shaft?

i ran 18-41 and 16-36 with 22" tires. both of those gearings would be very close to 17-38. i had reason for running this gearing. i did go faster in 300' sand drags with 18-41 gearing.

this year i will be working on alot of different gearing changes.

my bike has power that alot of bikes don't not in a peak power way the the curve. when i tore 2nd gear up at the dunes i was about to take off in thrid with a 15 front. this is was with 22" 10 paddle tires. the bike was still very very fast this way.

you may want to try different gearing to see what you bike likes best.

Butt- I'm running the 14\40 with 22's. I like it. I've ran it that way the last couple times out including FSW where I ran the hill probably 100 times that weekend. No problems at all.

I am running 17/40 currently, I have used 15/40 and of course stock. Dsmike is right, try different ratios until your happy with it. When your motor makes more power you find out real quick how short the stock gearing is. First gear on my DS is virtually useless with stock or lower gearing. Don't overlook the fact that if you are shooting a hill at say the top of second gear by say 3/4 of the way up and your motor doesn't have enough poop to shift and pull third then going up a tooth on the countershaft may produce more speed with little loss in RPM.
