gaps and temp
#1
ok this is weird to me, i have a tapping noise in my motor after changing cams and springs, ive done this about 3 months ago, when i first fired her up she had one hella noise, i checked the gaps between the cams and tappets and two were way off then, i but the new shims in and rechecked them again that was about 3 weeks ago it was about 50 degrees, there was one that had no gap at all, today 30 degrees, i check them again to make sure what shims i needed to order, well today the one that had no gap now has .004" could the weather being 20 degrees cooler make that big of a difference, what is going on here, im lost and not really knowing what to do
thanks

I didn't think of it the first time but many have had problems with their cam chain tensioner after reassembly, maybe what the noise is? check out markys site, he has manual chain tensioners available to fix the "auto tensioner blues".

Whenever I check clearance, I always turn the crank at least two full revolutions before stopping at tdc and locking it. This insures that all buckets at tightly against the shims and stems before I start, whether its shim over or shim-under bucket.
Ron Wood reccomends .007-.009 clearance, apposed to the shop manual. I shoot for the high side, rather have a couple extra than not enough.
