Default 02 Baja Seems Dead

I have an 02 Baja that I recently put 22" Holeshot XCT's on. Yesterday I went out for a rip up my road. I immediatly noticed that it would not pass 6500 6600 rpm in 5th flat out. Seems that it has lost power. Does anyone else know if the 02 Baja has enough ponies to still red line in 5th with the larger diameter tires. Seems to me that I have red in here that the ds loves the 22" with stock gearing nad has no problem to turn the engine. Do you think that my motor has developed some issues.. Maybe time for a compression test or valve adjustment????

power loss somewhere - carb issue, lack of valve clearance, places to start. Have the valves ever been checked? If not, they need it, and probably need adjusted whether its the cause of the issue or not. I'd start here.
there's a lot of valve work going on lately around the forum, myself included!Valve Adjustment

Thanks for the reply,

I have never adjusted the valve on my bike, so I guess it must be time. I probably only have a about 75 hour on the bike since new. Not much time to tide lately. Should the ds pull the 22" tires to 7600 rpm??

Thanks

I would certainly think so, although I'm not speaking from experience here.
When my bike was stock except pipe and cdi - I could pull 8400 in fifth with 20" tires and stock gearing - the 22" tires surely wouldn't cause that much loss.

FYI - after the 10 hr. break-in my valves were still fine on adjustment. At 40hrs. I had to increase intake valve clearances .002" but the exhaust were fine. At 120hrs all 4 were still perfect, exhaust never needed it, and intake only got it once. On a stock motor, once you adjust them the first time, seems like its a long time before they need it again.

i'd check the hose running from the airbox to carb.Mine would collapse at WOT and bike would not top out and sputter due to air starvation.

Jimbo,

Exactly how did you determine that your hoses were colapsing at WOT, don't tell me that you ran WOT without the seat, gotta be another way LOL.........

If my valve adjustement doesn't cure my problem, I will sheck those hoses

Thanks

just have the seat off and blip the throttle wide open in neutral. You'll see the hose collapse.I used 3 radiator hose clamps on it and it never happened again.total cost to fix $1.29

Alright, here is the scoop,

I check my clearances yesterday and I have .005" on the exhaust and .006 on the Intake. I am assuming that these are within spec according to the literature I have. My Problem still exists, Will not hit redline in 5th with 22" tires. I also check to see if the Rubber intake was colapsing at WOT but it does not seem to be. Where else should I look?? Last night I did notice at WOT i heard some noise coming from the engine area, kinda sounded like detonation or pre-ignition making me think that it may be realated to Jettting\Fuel\ingintion timing?? Gotta be something.

Any ideas????

I went to 22 in. in the rear and mine would not pull either , I put the stock tires back on and it was fine with the 16 tooth sproket. I went to a 15 tooth ft. sproket and it works great.
