Default rust on chain

I just bought a 2001 ds650 and i noticed a little rust on the chain ,i would imagine its from washing it and letting it sit for a year ,but is it something to worry about and whats the best way to get it off.it looks bad when the quad still looks brand new but the chain looks old.

Welcome to the forums.

I don't know how to get the existing rust off, but to keep it from getting worse or happening again get some good quality chain wax and apply it after you ride. I use VP brand. It gets into the chain and then dries up so dirt and sand don't stick.

A good hard ride in dry sand seems to blast most things clean... maybe it would take the rust off the chain and you'd have a good time doing it!!

wipe each link with an oily rag to clean the rust off best you can, but don't actually oil chain. oil will just colect dirt like crazy while you ride, and sling oil film all over the back of the crankcase and bottom of fender over time.
use an offroad chain lube made for this purpose, i've used just about everything in trial and love the BellRay Superclean chain lube the very best. it dries like BigBen spoke of the wax. the waxes are good too, but they do buildup over time and require a little bit more effort to remove, but still much better than oil.
