Default Slowing a Sunl 70 with sprockets

I got one of these from raceway for christmas for my daughter. Nice atv, but I would like to slow it down and give it more bottom end.

Without the use of the speed limiter screw, I believe this bike would easily go 30 to 40 mph with a child on it. It really moved with me when I test drove it after assembly.

The speed limiter screw is useful for slowing it down, but it also will prevent the rpms needed to pull hills. I've got the screw set at a spot that I believe will give her enough power to pull moderate inclines without allowing to much speed. However, I would like to be able to set it up with sprockets that would allow the bike to better use the engines power for bottom end/hills without giving too much speed (preferably no more than 20 mph).

So, has anyone changed the sprockets on one of these? Are aftermarket smaller front and/or larger rear sprockets available that will work on these bikes?

Thanks,
Rodney

Default Slowing a Sunl 70 with sprockets

For any one trying to find different size sprockets this might help.

I tried to do some research on other sources of sprockets and the only site I found that posted their Engineering drawings and specs was JT Sprockets. But you could only get to the drawings and specs by choosing a model of motorcycle or ATV and obviously the Chinese ATV’s are not listed. I noticed that all the drawings were in the same web directory. So I whipped up a quick web page that displays all their drawings on one page and a few others that just show drawings by chain size. These are just their front sprockets for now. The drawings don’t tell how many different teeth versions there are, some come in 12 through 19 teeth. If you find one that match’s your sprocket then go back to JT sprockets and look up the Model number in their Buyers Guide, it will then show you the Available teeth numbers and all the different bikes it fits. Here are the links

JT sprockets 420
JT sprockets 428
JT sprockets 520
JT sprockets all
Buyers Guide

Hope this helps someone

I just bought a mini 90 from Raceway and I believe it is pretty much the same as the SunL. I did regear it to slow it down and give it alot more bottom end. I used the sprockets from a Meerkat 50. The stock sprockets on the 90 was 32t rear and 14t front. The meerkat had a 38t rear with 12t front. Everything bolted right up except I had to drill out the holes on the rear sprocket just a little bigger. I then took 2 of the meerkat chains and put them together and cut it to the length that I needed. Once everything was mounted I was able to put the screw in pretty far. It pulls great up good inclines and still has a decent top speed without being too fast. It is a great setup. It should come like this from the factory. It is geared way too high stock for smaller kids and like you said if you limit it back it wont climb hills.

Where did you buy your sprockets and chains? How much? Did you compare the sprockets? Are the stock the same pitch as the Meerkat?
Thanks in advance.

I got my parts off an old meerkat. The pitches are different. One is a 420 and the other is 428. Thats why I used both sprockets and the chain from the meerkat.

Thanks for the info. I have the XL-70 which is a Sunl-70. I found the sprockets and chain at a decent price
Front Sprocket $28.95
Rear Sprocket $36.50
Chain $18.50

I can send in the old rear sprocket to Sprocket Specialists, and they will make me a new one to my specs for around $50.00. They couldn't tell me if they would be able to make a new front without seeing it first. How do you tell the pitch? I don't see it on the chain or sprockets. Trying to decide if it would be better to have them make me one or go the route you did and buy the Meerkat 50 parts. I could probably just order the correct chain length instead of buying 2. I wonder what the biggest rear sprocket I could use and also what the smallest front that would fit?

I finally got around to sending the sprockets into Sprocket Specialists. The front sprocket can not be changed (smaller that is). The rear sprocket can only be increased to a maximum of 42 teeth (37 teeth original) due to frame clearance issues. With the 42 tooth sprocket the frame will need to be bent down approximately 3/4". Part # ID 1556 4BH-330 DRILL BC 2560. For the new sprocket and heavy duty DID chain the total came to $92.98 before shipping. The chain was $29.99.
