Just looked at the map, I can't ride in the Salt Lake Valley but I can park my truck just out side then ride along side I80 for a few miles (love that Nevada scenery) and can meet you there on my Jet 250! If I make it that far with no problems the trail you have picked should be a breeze!
I will meet up with you in the parking area, Oh ya I will be the one with the camcorder taped to my head!

I am learning overnight temperatures even in August get down near freezing at 10,000ft. This adds more caution and prep since our gear is more mid-climate oriented. Means packing more stuff for the cold and potential life threatening situations. Not sure if bears and wolves are dumb enough to carouse around on them peaks but need to call ranger station to check that out too.

Any others want to join, I'm getting scared? :-)
Last will and testament?? I hope it doesnt come to that.. OK outofline can be there but he cant help you...only film...your on your own (just like a real survival show)

Really? Thats kinda cold for us Californians..especially in the summer...long underwear maybe? Bears?? hmmm .... they usually they avoid trails from my experience, but I would ask.

How are you going to haul all the gear? Racks or a trailer? What do you plan on taking with you?

I would love to go with you just have no time..Real busy at my shop for the last few months..At least when work does slow down a little I will be able to afford to go camping/riding...

The link works for me.

@outofline - give me a call when you get to Reno, not that I don't trust you, I mean your quad. :-)

The weather thing took me by surprise too but I did more checking and called the visitor center at Carson Pass (8600 ft) and they confirmed it can drop to the 30's during the summer at the peaks. There is year round ice/"mini" glaciers up there.

Taking a jeep, no problems on bringing plenty of gear and clothes to keep warm. Hell, I'd even throw in a gas heater. But with a bedroll tied to the rear rack plus whatever else can be securely tied on does not leave much room for error.

Figure I'll use list for a backpack trip plus some tools and extra gas. I need to do this in the next month or it may get pushed off till next summer. Maybe I'll just make sure we get out of there before the date when the Donner Party got hosed!

You gonna make this trip this year? Im hoping to make the 2nd annual 1 next year...was even thinking of taking a few people along and even riding the Jetmoto 200 dirt bike Ive got...

Also is this a planned over nite trip? or a worst case scenario over nite trip?

Still think outofline has to come film it..."man vs wild" style..

I would like to do it this year but if does not happen this month, planned overnight camping up on the peaks would most likely be scratched off but camping down at Bear Reservoir overnight would still be fine as it is at 5900 ft.

I've been on about a 1/3 of the trail a couple times and have done a lot of the planning via topos and google maps. I posted some info earlier in the thread.

What makes this such an adventure is riding Chinese quads that far, that high, and that remote. Breaking down along the trail is not life threatening but could be a HUGE pain in the a.. getting back to camp. Having a second quad and even a tow line may not work, it is VERY rough in stretches and the terrain is very steep and loose soil in places. Last time we got stuck for a fair bit of time trying to climb back up a steep grade due to really soft dirt. Had to go off trail and try several attempts to find a less steep route with more traction to get back up. Hated to tear up the delicate vegetation but had no other options.

What JM200 dirt bike???

No need to be too cold...when is it the warmest up there? about now?

I just wasnt sure if it was a planned overnite camping trip or a "if something goes wrong overnite camping trip"..

Hey Ive had break downs with Austrian and Japanese machines on the trail..Riding a Chinese machine just adds to the excitement factor..

It's a 200 Enduro...was mainly a street bike we converted to off road only...We were going to ride it in a Family Enduro along side my XR200..Then do a report on how it did...When it came time to race my son and i got laid off and had another job but didnt have any insurance...didnt seem to wise of a time to test a Chinese dirt bike..

There is a pic of it on my pic page..

Thanks. Looks nice but sure not stock. Took off 40 lbs of metal?? Is it still roadworthy?

Click on your own username in a post, go to albums. You don't see the one you posted above. Might see if you can link it to your profile; otherwise, much harder to find.
