Ginny and I are looing forward to this. Are the trails well marked? You guys are going to have to tell us where we need to ride. ( until you'll get there) My brother may go with us. He has never ridden, but thinks it would be fun.

The trails are not marked, but it is prety hard to get lost out there. if you ride south, just turn around and ride north [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]
Pretty easy to get back to where you started. Most of the trails lead back to the same place. But if you get lost you will need to take off your pants and tie them around your head, then get mud and paint your face. That way you can blend in with all the aborigines that live near the river. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img] if they say "sacrifice", start running.

The State agency that issues your "land use permit" is the Oklahoma Dept of Wildlife, 1801 N. Lincoln, they are just down the street from the Jim Thorpe Commission which houses the Corp, Commission. What you would want to do there is set yourself up as a dealer that sells hunting and fishing licenses, because the land use permits for riding in the Wildlife Managemetn areas are handled thru the same folks that sell hunting & Fishing licenses.

Well Guys,
We attended the Lake Board meeting today to discuss recommending to the City Council that the ATV trails be approved at Sportsman Lake. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful.
There are only 3 members on the Lake Board right now. Another Councilor and I have our city attorney working on drafting an ordinance that would allow 5 members to serve on the board. But, changing the number of Lake Board members entails changing the City Charter, which will take a vote of the people. It should pass, but the vote won't be until November, which doesn't help us now.

The issue isn't dead though. The City Council could still go against the Lake Board recommendation and approve the trails.

Two of the Lake Board members cited "erosion concerns" as their basis to vote against the trails. That seems to be the primary concern. Money, Tourism, fairness to the community, etc... is not a factor in this equasion. Nope, it's concerns over erosion - so that's where we need to focus our area of rebuttal.
Anybody got any "undisputable" information we could use to combat this issue?

BTW, you guys would be proud of your new CoacATVclub members. They were courteous and polite, but they put up ONE HECK of a fight. I was darn proud of them.

One other note: The Lake Board member who voted "for" approving the ATV trails promptly resigned when the other 2 members voted against him. He said he couldn't serve on a board that refused to treat "all" community members fair.
I think (hope) we got him talked into staying though. He's the only member who cares about being fair and we don't want to lose him. We'll see what happens - he was pretty upset.

 

Are you guys still planning a meeting for the 21st? I have a new toy and need to ride, and to finally meet all you guys.

After the ATV portion was over, the lake board heard from the equestrians about their plans for the (our) portion. After a lengthy proposal, the lake board unanimously voted to once again recommend to the council that it be awarded to the equestrians. The next item on the agenda (after the final vote was already done and the equestrians were "given" the land) was "oh yeah, is there any other group that would like to address the board about the land in question?" I raised my hand to ask the purpose of the agenda item and the chair failed to recognize me. The chairman of the lake board has been a VERY active member of the equestrian group for many years as well as a lake board member.

Just thought I'd catch everybody up.

Don't know if we're going to cook. We did last time, and it was pretty d@mn good....We just assumed that you would be bringing the crab and lobster this time. (Bring enough for about 40 people.) [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

Seriously...Not sure if we're going to cook on the 28th, but I'm all for it, and can bring another load of burgers....And anything else that is needed (buns/mustard/chips).


If your brother has never ridden, this is pretty much the perfect place for hime to ride. Nothing too technical, and lots of open spaces/room for error.

As for the trails being marked, this isn't really a formal riding area. There are no rules, no campsites, and no trail markings. You ride what you want, where you want, when you want. You can also camp wherever you want.

It's pretty much "every man for himself" down there. Trucks, Jeeps, sandrails are fairly common, but they generally stay in areas that the quads don't go.

 

That sounds great as there may be 5 of us. Two have not ridden very much. It looks like we will leave Saturday morning the 28 th probably around 9. Tell me again EXACTLY where to go and unload. ( and no comments about going to hell because we are from Texas) I could re read all these posts, but that would be too easy and take too long.
Also, are any of you guys going to ride on Sunday? We will either ride in Purcell on Sunday morning or go to Lake Murray. Let us know.
