I have a 88trx250 honda. I've removed the swing arm and removed the axle. I have considerable damage within the aluminum housing where the sealed bearing (on the chain side) has disintegrated and chewed up the brace inside as well. Should I replace the whole unit (swing arm) or is this fixable? The axle has some extra ripples in it as well, it is straight but I don't know if I'll be able to get a new bearing on it. Can I get it ground ? And if I do, Will I have to get a special bearing to fit?
I also have a crack in the swing arm along a weld and across one arm. Can this be welded? Or am I going to be investing alot of money?
Any help is appreciated...Thanx Andrew

You cannot use your axle or carrier anymore. You should replace them both. You cannot grind on the axle because it won't fit and you won't be able to get a bearing to fit either. Plus, if you grind on the axle it will break right where you did the grinding. I don't really know what damage you could have done the swingarm, but you might have to replace that too. The aluminum swingarms are junk and aren't worthy of repair. You will probably be spending a lot of money to replace all that stuff, but it is well worth it in the long run.

I agree, it seems obvious to me you do some hard riding. In that case, you'd be much better off in the long run to just replace the parts. Aluminum is quite soft compared to steel and once it's been bent it doesn't retain it's orignal shape very well.

In regards to welding it, the only way you'll be able to weld aluminum is if you have a TIG welder (which generally costs $1200).

In regards to the axle, I haven't had any luck yet trying to straighten one. You could take it to a driveline shop they might be able to. But again, the cost is probably comparable to buying a new one. Plus the new one will be much stronger.

Now could be your chance, if you want, to purchase a longer swing arm or whatnot.

As the other people have said, you need a new axle and bearing carrier. You can get and after market twin carrier for about $200 or get a tapered for more money. If you are just a weekend rider get a stock axle. If you race some get after market. You did not say if you have a R or an X quad. If it is a R, you can not weld the aluminum and get it to hold. An X is made of steel and it should be about to be welded.
The one thing that many people don't do is to check the rear end of the quad for lose bearing. I don't knopw if you did, but as you can see when the bearing go out and they are on replaced befor hand it can be very costly. You might want to also check the front wheel bearing at the same time.
