longest lasting mud tire

I do not know about Gators but you can not go wrong with Kenda Bear Claws and 26 inch would look sweet on you ride. I would not go to big as you do not have a low gear range and you just might overtax the belt playing with a big tire and deep mud as well as if you plan on towing heavy loads. I opted for the 450 when I found out they deleted the low/high range on the 400's. I rode a 2001 during hunting season and pulled some heavy loads in low that I would be afraid to in high, chances of smoking a belt is not what I want to do when I am back in the mountains by myself. I would not recommend the Gators since the tread is soft and wears faster over time. I have a friend who has the 26's and they are falling apart much sooner than expected. What you should be looking at is the ITP 589 M/S or the Titan 589's (the ITP's have a stronger tread pattern than the Titan's). That would be your best best! I just recently purchased a set of 26" ITP 589's for my 2004 Honda Foreman ES (450) and a set of 27" Maxxis Mudzilla's for a 2001 Bombardier Traxter (500) which I should be getting on Wednesday.
You probably shouldn't go more than 26" with the type of ATV you have. As the other guy had mentioned, it would be a lot of wear and tear! If you are planning on going with a heavier tire, you should consider aluminum wheels, which are lighter!
Good luck in your quest!

I have a 2001 Yamaha Kodiak and got rid of the stock tires immediately after the purchase.. I have GBC Gators, 27" x 10 front and 27" x 12 rear. A problem developed in the front after the larger tires were installed, a BIG RUB on the inside of the right tire during hard right turns. To correct this I had to install HighLifter 1" wheel spacers on the front and have had no further problems. I have found these tires to work great in all conditions I could place my ATV into (mud, water, and hill climbing). The tire tread on these tires have lasted over two years, 1050 miles, with rides almost every weekend and I still have good tire tread left. When these tires are retired, I will be putting new GBC Gators on again. This is one tough 6-ply tire that has served me well!!
