Currently, I am using PJ1 Chain Lube on my 400EX. The chain is lubed fine, but dirt sticks to the spray and is hard to get off. When I lift the chain to check the slack, I can hear the sand and grit on the chain grinding on the sprockets. I lube my bike chain with WD40 and it does a great job and dirt doesn't stick to it. For my quad, should I switch to WD40 or stick with the PJ1 lube? Will dirt stick to WD40 also. I don't do a ton of dirt riding on my bike, but so far there isn't any dirt accumulation. Dirt Wheels recommends Maxima Chain Wax. Please help me, I don't want to ruin my new chain and/or sprockets. What should I do (if anything)? Thanks.

Mike,
At the advice of a friend at a local dealership, I bought a can of MFR Chain Lube.
Metal Friction Reducer, its for o-ring and non o-ring chains. The stuff goes on almost like good old WD-40, but this stuff dries, and your chain looks and feels dry. O-ring chains are permanently lubricated from the inside, all you are suppose to do is lube the o-rings, the chain is made to run basically dry.
Nothing sticks to this stuff, no greasy mess, nothing...
I bought this locally, so you should be able to find it relatively easily.
Good Luck!!!

Mike, I've used nothing but Chain Wax By Maxima & it works for me. The carrier evaporates almost immediately, leaving your chain dry and only the lubricant itelf on the chain. They make a non- o-ring type as well as an o-ring type; make sure you pick up the right one. O- ring chains do not like any type of solvent as it destroys the rubber o ring, hence the two types of lubes.

As for WD-40, the reason dirt doen't stick to it is because WD40 has little or no lubricant in it, and it is slung off right away, anyway. It's a good rust preventative & protectatant but not a lube.
The part about you're hearing grinding & grit, is possibly my teeth grinding when I read that"). You need to clean your chain, before lubing it again. The lube just holds all that crud on the chain. Get yourself one of those parts cleaning brushes the shops use
and a coffee can with some kerosene & slosh and brush till there's no more grinding noise.Let it dry well & then use your chain lube. This works fairly well for routine maintainance, but it is a good idea to remove the chain periodically & soak/agitate it in kerosene. In my case, owning a Diesel truck, I use Diesel fuel. It's more readily available & only a step or so away from kerosene in the refining process anyway.
Mike this may be way more than you wanted to know, but the chain is the most abused & uually the least maintained item on any bike.

Honda makes a chain lube that works wonders. I got it at the local dealer and it holds up really well. I've also used the Maxima chain wax but to me the Honda stuff is better. Nothing sticks to it and the chain stays looking clean.
