Default Shifting w/out clutch!?!

I was reading dirt wheels when some guy asked about shifting his z400 without using his clutch. i still dont get how this works.DW said you should let off the throttle and u must time it right. im coming up from a 90cc and wanted to know as much as i could before getting a full manuel quad.im 15, 5'8" and was thinking about a DVX400 or maybe a suzuki z400? any suggetions/replies would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have a buddy who NEVER uses the clutch on his Mojave. He says the trans is fully syncronized, and you don't need to clutch anyway. His bike seems to be fine, and I think it is something like 12 years old!

Personally, I don't want to take any kind of risk with my precious machines, so I'll stick with the clutch!

If your coming up from a 90 you mite want to look into a 250ex. You still shift but it has an auto clutch. Instead of running the risk of messing up the trans on the manual and in dirt wheels when he was talking about shifting with no clutch he only ment some times not all the time. You would still have to use the clutch to take off and when you stop.

The mojave isnt exactly a powerhouse, I imagine even a 400 would be exerting a good deal more power on the driveline even if its heavier duty. I've always been under the impression that its much worse for your bike to downshift without the clutch than upshift. I've also seen drag racers who have tranny issues from not clutching on upshifts, granted these were high powered machines.

I'm with RR, there really isnt a point not to use the clutch unless racing so I'm not going to take any risks either.

I used to shift w/o the clutch only, but once i got my preddy i started using it. Yea its just like they said though, once you get into the higher RPMs, just let off the gas and kick it up. As for the quad, i would go with the DVX or the Z. You would out grow the 250ex real quick, to me its not worth the money, but if you have enough to spread around it might not be a bad idea.

the only time i ever shift without a clutch is when i forget because of the habit of riding the bigbear...i dont really want to risk it seeing as the thing is 16 years old and would be a pain to fix...clutching is easy enough anyway
