Default Mom needs help!! What is the Best Mud Tire for Honda 250 Recon ES

My son has a Honda 250 Recon ES. He like all little boys wants new tires!! He thinks he wants Super Swampers for the back. We do trail ride and get into some mud holes.. We don't abuse them though! He wants to be able to run with his Daddy and the big boys 350's and up! But he thinks these tires are the ticket. Before we buy them I need all your help!

I have looked around and not knowing what I am looking at the super swampers are ok, but what about the mud bugs? Or is there a better tire out there for his size ATV. Now keep in mind his is 9 years old and I don't want to spend $100.00 for a single tire.

I look forward to your opinions!

Thanks Guys!

On something that small, I would put Mudlites on it. They are lite (what a small motor quad needs) and they are fairly cheap and come in lots of sizes.

Thank You!!! I have been looking at ALOT of sites to try to get this right!!! Do you have an opinion about the Outlaw MTS??? However I am pretty sure we will be ordering the Mudlites like you suggested.

Sorry, not familiar with the Outlaws, but some of the different sites shows the weigh of the tires and I would stay with a lite one. Some of the mud tires can get pretty heavy. For basic trails and some mud I like the Mudlites and Swamplites. I don't know what size of tire is on a 250es, but I would problably stay with a 25" one. I am afraid much taller would kill some power. Are you just getting tires or wheels also? Being how young he is, I would stay away from a wheel with anymore offset than the factory ones. More offset on the front could cause the steering to get heavy.

His tires are 22X10X9. I have found a few sites with weights and I see what you mean!! You have been a big help! I think we are going to have to do wheels too... the selection is very limited withthe 9's.

I'd lean towards mudlites, or mudbugs. Both are lightweight, and will be easier for the 250 to spin. The mudbugs will have the edge in the mud, and 'lites have the edge on the trail. Both will be much better than the stockers in mud tho.

Super Swampers are good tires, but are you looking at the normal swampers or the vamps? The Vamps will be really heavy, I would't recommend them for a 250. Not without some power mods anyway. The regular swampers are lighter, but still heavier than the 'bugs or 'lites.

If the stockers are 22", I doubt the 250 could effectively spin 25" without major mods to it. I would stay with stock size.

22" Maxxis Mudbugs are fairly light, cheap, and much better in mud than stockers without as much weight as vamps. Decent trail manners too. They come in a 22x10x9", 1.2" tread depth, 19.2 lbs, 6 ply. Also a 22x11x9", 23.6 lbs. These are off the maxxis website.

I forgot to add, ITP Mudlites come in a 22x11x9, 3/4" tread depth. Interco Super Swamper TSL's come in a 22x12.5x9, roughly 3/4" tread depth. Not sure on the weights. Interco Swamplite's come in a 22x11x9 size, not sure on the tread depth, or the weight, might be a decent tire too.

I live in the desert so I'm no expert on mud, but I am an expert on the Recon. This little machine will not do well if you load it down with huge or heavy tires. Tall tires will change the effective gearing and you will lose low end power (just what you don't need to do in the mud) and the effect of extra weight should be obvious. Stay with something that is 22" and light........probably Mudlites........

Yes, when you are looking at tire sizes, example 22x10x9, the first number is the tire diameter, the second the tire width, the last the rim/wheel diameter. So a 22x10x9 is 22" diameter, 10" wide, and 9" diameter wheel. Should fit the Recon fine, Mudlites/Vamps/Super Swampers/Swamplites all have 22" tires with 9" wheels also. I would stick with a Mudbug or Mudlite tho.
