we have a 1994 yamaha kodiak and we are newbies, can you tell me if i am correct?
these are what size tires i should be looking for? these are the numbers we pulled off the old ones: front- AT 25 X 8 - 12
rear- AT 25 X 10 - 12
there was also other markings: dunlop kt402 x254 j-177 ...is this just specific to the brand? thanks!

Those are really common sizes.
The numbers on ATV tires are always in the same order:
Tire Diameter. Tire Width. Wheel Diameter.
Other diameter or width tires may or may not work, but would still have to end in 12 for the wheel diameter.

As far as type of tires, it depends on what type of riding you want to do. The stock tires that come on most atvs, like the stock tires my King Quad still has for example, aren't very aggressive. They're made to last a long time but aren't great in mud or snow. It has the exact same size tires your Kodiak has front and rear. If you want something slightly more aggressive but still will last quite a while, I'd look at the ITP Mud Lite At's, I had those on my previous atv and they were a good overall tire. They last a long time and aren't too expensive
Another good choice is Kenda Bearclaws
