How do you all rate these tires?

I have had the 26" 589 MT's, and absolutely love them. Even got a set for my wife's Rancher. Great trail ride, and awesome in the goop. They are a little choppy below 3-5mph, but smooth out after that. |
I have to agree, 589's are a good tire. I had the blackwater XT bigwheel kit on my kodiac, and they rode really rough on any kind of hard pack at low speeds. Put The 27" 589MT's on my 2002 Grizzly, like them much better.

What is the difference between the 589 MT and MS? Are they both 6-ply? I trail ride 75% of the time so should I get 26" or 27"? I need some advice here from the tire guru's. Or what about the Dirt Devil's or Gators?

The MS lugs are solid, while the MT's are stepped, with a recessed cup at the top. The MT's also have ribs (for pleasure?) between the lugs that is supposed to keep the mud from creating a suction-effect to the smooth part of the tire. Both are 6-ply rated, and are great tires. The MT's are configred that way to provide a smoother and softer ride on hardpack, but it's pretty much a visual and personal preference. Whether you get the 26's or 27's depends on what bike you have, and the power/torque available. 26's will feel a lot closer to OEM (stock), where 27's could affect the horsepower, but give you a little more clearance. It's kind of a trade-off. WIth the 27's, you may have to use low-range on some really steep hils, but that's not too big of a deal for most folks. |
I have the ITP 589's 27 X 9 X 12,all the way around, on my 01 Honda Foreman 450 ES.They certainly demand HP,in the higher gears.I lost a fair amount top end speed ,but we do 99%of our riding on the trails,in deep water,mud,and even some snow,so top end speed for me isn't that important.The tires have a little bit of vibration atlow speed,( 4 or 5 mph ) on hard packed surfices. On the trails and in the mud I think they are awsome.I don't think you'll be sorry if you get these tires.

Bob pretty much gave you a great rundown on the tires
ITP makes the M/S and titan makes the M/T I picked the 26-12-12 and 26-9-12 M/S over the titans I felt they have a better sidebite and more aggresive tread and I think they were a couple lb's lighter If your just doing trail rideing without sharp rocks and things why dont you look into the titan A/T's?It's a 4ply witch means more top end |

Another big difference between the m/t and the m/s is the m/t has a massive rim guard around the bead ant the m/s doesnt. keeping that in mind if you ride in a lot of rocks that can be important to you're wheels. I just put a set of 26 m/t's on my 2000 foreman s and I love them but in the deep snow going up hills I noticed a big power loss due to too much traction and not enough wheel spin so I ordered a pipe and jet/filter and I'll see what happens.

I dont know about the Gators or 589's but the 27" Dirt Devils are an awsome tire. I have 27-10-12's on the front and 27-12-12's on the back of my 650 and they work great. The fronts are 25.250" tall and the backs are 25" tall with 5lbs. of air on the stock wheels. The tires are 6 ply and heavy but the Prarie doesn't notice the extra weight. They work great in all types of terrain. (mud-snow-gravel-sand-dirt) There is a little bump at low speeds (1-3mph) anything over that and they ride extremly smooth. They also have very deep tread, the 26-28" have 1.250" depth of tread and look "just plain mean". One other advantage of the Dirt Devil's is you can get them for a very reasonable price compared to some of the other tires on the market. I think all of the tires mentioned in this thread are good but the Dirt Devils are one of the best values!
