What I do is take a plastic or copper brush (soft, not to damage o rings) and put the axle on a jack, spin the tires and clean it real good. Then run it up and down the road to warm up the chain, wipe it off and use Maxima Chain Wax spray,it is parrafin based, goes on a liquid, dries to a fairly non-tacky dry coating that won't fling off,and repels water pretty good. Lasts for a while, better than lube that flings off and collects dirt.

I can say that I thought I would do something nice for my o-ring chain and give it a good coating of Bel-Ray Chain lube. It sure stays on better but it also is tacky and collected much more gunk over time. Just as 95Wolv says give it a good cleaning with brush ever so often. I gave the Bel-Ray away and I'm back to plain old 10W-30 just as the manual states.
