St. Anthony Dunes 6-22-03

I wanted to give all of you coming up this weekend an update on these dunes. This past thursday-Sunday (6-22) have been pretty windy, as long as you don't mind getting sandblasted the dunes stayed smooth. They have very sharp peaks on the north sides and there are some holes at the tops of dunes. The sand is pretty soft but you can run knobbies but paddles are much better. I was out there today and here is the news: Both corners of the field entering the Egin lakes access have posted no trespassing signs. The new parking lots there are partially open, They planned to have them done and opened for memorial day but since they missed that they now say finished by July 4. They have hardly done a thing since the week before memorial day except put rocks all over to keep machines from riding on the side of roads. Today I didn't notice the sign that said no overnight camping in egin lakes but I may have missed it, if it is an issue for anyone let me know and I will check next time I go out. (mon or tues) The lake is fairly low now, it is actually split into 2 lakes. Also make sure you have a current OHV sticker and a flag that reaches at least 8 ft high from the ground so you are legal, they are checking a lot of machines these days. Be safe and I will see you there.

Thanks for the update there Boybug. We're heading down this coming weekend and staying at Mean Gene's. I didn't think Egin would be open towards the end of June like they said, the last couple of trips down there it looked like they hadn't worked on it at all. Hey, how does your Z pull Choke Cherry with those mods, and how much do you weigh? I could barely get halfway up it with my LT last trip the sand was so soft. I raced against a Z with cams and a 436 big bore kit up the backside of thunder man did that thing run.

I weigh 230 lbs and can climb choke in 2nd, usually. I am looking into more power so I can outclimb my riding buddies. One is that kid with the 436, he weighs a buck 25 so I need quite a bit to beat him. If you ever get a chance go meet him at Rexburg Motorsports, they are the Suzuki dealer and he is the parts manager. I will probably see you out there.

Yeah that 436 really made me look stupid, I weigh 200 and my LT '87 has some mods too. The 436 was racing a 686 Rappy from Billings with like stage 2 type cam and big intake valves 11-1 and the Raptor annihilated the Z. That Raptor was beating my buddies good-running Banshee though, it was way fast. If you happen to be there this weekend, we'll be staying at the baby end but taking some rides down to the bigger dunes. I'll have the only LT250 left being used in existence so you can spot us. That guy from billings with the 686 was a very cool kid. He let me ride that thing and it was very fun. It is the fastest 4 stroke I have ridden. I still know of Banshees beating him, mostly 410 and larger drag bikes, but I could not complain about that raptors motor at all.

Heck Boybug it looks like we were chewing some of the same dirt. The day that guy was running the 436 we were at the day parking lot at Egin, the Raptor was right next to us. Yeah, nice kid, talked to him for a while. I bet that thing was a hoot to drive. I been on some fast quads but no fast 43 strokes--I bet it's neat---gotta BUILD me one of THOSE.

What's the forcast for the rest of the week at the dunes? We are heading out Wednesday late afternoon or early Thursday morning and are staying until Monday. Can hardly wait to get there. We have about a 12 - 14 hour drive ahead of us, but it looks like it is well worth the drive. Our first time to the dunes. Looking foward to an awesome 3 days of riding.
