Default Best sand tire thats not a paddle?

I need a tire that I can use in dirt and sand. The place I usually ride is a mix of sand and hardpack. The first pit is hardpack. The paddle tires are terrible there of course, but then we go into the dunes. So, I need a tire that will hold up ok in the hardpack, but will also have decent traction in the sand.

When I rode bikes, I used a Bridgestone M25/M26 Front/Rear combo. They are for sand/mud and worked well in both pits. Any suggestions?

The low pressure balooney tires that usually come stock on a lot of bikes, do pretty good in sand. For instance, at Pismo they rent a lot of bikes (eg. the 250EX) with stockers, and they do pretty well.

DEMag, I'd get a set of Realtor tires. They are a hybrid design that is in between a paddle and a mud tire. You can even reverse the tread when switching from dirt to sand to make the paddle action better.

Another vote for the Realtor's here. They're heavy, but an excellent compromise, I'll be running a set when I hit the Central Oregon desert/dunes.

Another tire you might want to look at is the Spider~Tracs from ITP. They are excellent for hardpack and mud and have the ability to scoop the sand also. I was just at Glamis and they worked pretty good. Good luck on your choice.

the stock dunlop tires on the z 400 and raptor work very nicely in sand and mud.

I have Maxxis Sur-Traks and they can be ran either way. The area I ride in has a mixture of sand and hard pack and they work very well either way. I am very pleased with them.6

Razr 2's will smoke Geckos in a sand drag .

Click on my site and look at the Logandale pics , its mostly sand and hard pack desert . There is no way to ride paddles cause you have to ride hard pack rocky crap to get to the sand . The Razr 2's are awesome , I have never been stuck in the sand with them.
