slide was a big hill, but it wasnt the height that hilled you. It was nearly straight up and down. It was at such a radical angle you couldnt even get a run at it cuz you'd basically run straight into a wall of sand.

The area from pole 8 all the way to Devil's Slide has been closed since 1982. No access has been allowed since then. I have flown over it in a small plane and it still looked pretty much the same except for the base. At the time there was a huge drop straight to the water. It may be different now as the weather and tide changes. Don't let the pics above fool you. It looks like one steep hill, but there were actually two steep parts. You hit the bottom for all you were worth and went straight up. At approx. 500ft it leveled off to about half as steep as the first part for about 100ft and then went straight up again for another 600 to 700 ft. It was a challenge on the ATCs(185s and built 90s and 110s) of the day. I still remember staring drop jawed at the first 81 250R I saw go up. Two monthes later I had one. That area has some of the finest dunes anywhere. I really miss it.

Trust me guys, The pictures do it no justice. Usually half way up you would see 4x4s overheated , and many had to back down because they couldnt make it. Maybe one day before its my time to go, I will cut the fence and make a run for it. Wonder how far I would get before Johnny Law would get me?
