Default Dune terminologies

I've never been to any sand dunes riding and am not too far from Little Sahara, OK so I'm thinking of heading over there sometime soon.

I've never really been up to date on the terminology that is used and could you guys explain what some of them mean. I think I have an idea of a couple but would like to know for sure.

What are Razorbacks, witches eyes, etc?

Thanks

Kyle

OK, a rasorback is a pointed peak of a dune. If you hit it too fast, you catch a bit too much air. Most or many dunes have a steep side (that you climb and race up), when you get to the top it usually is somewhat level at the top. If you do not know what the top looks like before you get there, you might get a bit too much air! Now witches eyes are a feature that you come across. They are depressions in the dunes that are many times hidden untill you happen upon them. Small pits that from in irregular winds. They can flip you off your bike. Just keep your eyes open and you should be safe.

After riding the dunes for a while you will learn to "read" the dunes and be better able to anticipate what is coming. In the mean time, take it slow and easy at the top of hills, always approaching the top at an angle, so you don't go flying over the edge. The sand is always changing as well, so don't take for granted what is ahead of you. Best to go with an experienced duner the first time, and follow his line, do not deviate, that is when you learn what witches eyes are and the havoc they can wreak.

Ride with someone who knows the dunes, but don't ride to close. You"ll find out what a roost taste like.

Yeah. Unfortunately you will find some people who have labeled their trailers and trucks "WFO Racing". Which to me equates to "WT Racing". (white trash).

Thanks all, I was pretty close. Got another question for you. Are rear sand tires a necessity? Could I navigate through some of the dunes with knobbies before I plunk down some cash for more tires?

Stock tires will work just not as good as paddles. You can ride with stock and check out the paddles out there, there are so many different kinds. You'll have fun.

I think good knobbies do better than some cheap paddles.
