You have the biggest advantage in the dunes when you are light in weight, and float along on the top. You don't want to try to dig in and graple for traction, like a 4X4 does out on the trail. A descent sport bike is in the 350-370lb. range. The big Rincon, at 600+ lbs. has a 230-250 lb. handicap, right there! And, the extra traction of 4wd really isn't any advantage in the dunes. The bike is just out of its element. But still, if that is all you have to ride, "run what you brung".

Not everyone is a top speed freak/dragracer/hillshooter or whatever else is performance oriented. I use to ride my eiger 400 auto 4x4 in the dunes before I got my Z400 . I still take the ute for the casual ride and I use it to go and get the broken down units out there. Plus you can still drag race just line up against another ute. Reverse in 4 wheel also works good. I've actually raced in reverse against other 4x4's up hill at first bowl-sandlake now let me see a banshee do that. Fun is Fun just depends on how you look at it.

He can have plenty of fun still on his big 4x4. We take our Prairie out in the sand all the time. They make Paddle masters in 8x25x12s and 10x25x12s. Seen a prairie with those on climb Choke Cherrie at St.Anthonys.
