Now that I've caught your attention with the catchy title, here's my questions:

I have been riding for over 2 years and have never done a dune! I've seen photos and videos of the wild and crazy at Glamis, and have no desire to fly in a quad (but would like to join in on the fun). So, other than catching air over the top of a dune, what's the difference between trail and dune riding?

Now the party atmosphere seems great but also looks like it can out of hand. The kids don't need to see girls gone wild Glamis style (although the dads, and a few moms do). Are there places to camp and/or stage that are family friendly? I have a soon to be 9 year old and my riding buddies have children from age 2 (no, she doesn't ride just yet) to 14. Are there areas to go where the kids won't get run over while in camp or that the camp won't continually get dusted by some jerk?

Now for a real stupid question, are the camping areas sand? hard pack? dirt? whatever? I'm wondering how the tow vehicles/trailers/toy haulers manage in the sand.

Thanks, that was great, now someone pass me a smoke!

never have ridden glamis but sand is sand. its alot harder to turn in sand than in dirt but i bet you knew that. and sidehilling is totally diffrent. one thing that happens is when you are going along and your front tire starts to go up hill but you want to go straight and it throws the quad up make any sense? are you going with paddles for you lakota

New Duck - That's next on my list to get. Based on the photos I've seen, and on hitting sand on trails, I think you'd be insane to go to Glamis without paddles. Can I assume that on the dunes speed is the key to better control - kind of like a wave runner?

Another general question - are there family friendly riding spots out there? From reading prior Glamis posts it seems like there's lots of racing. Are there any places the kids can putt around?

Glamis on an off weekend (non holiday) weekend would probably be best for the kids... There are many different types of parking/camping areas...they range from hard pack, to soft sand. I know this really isn't explaining much, but there's something for everyone there....lol. When we just take the quads in the back of our trucks, we camp as far into the dunes as we can get...if we take the RV's we generally stay in the washes, as they're more hard packed. You can always stop at the store and ask them for suggestions...since they're on site, they can be more specific. As far as how is dune riding different from trail riding....generally it's alot smoother, and when your riding the bigger bowls, you can get into a type of rythm moving from bowl to bowl...you use centrifagul(sp) force, and momentum to stay stuck to the sides of the bowls.... plus the hills are generally alot steeper than what I ride when I trail ride. Try it, you'll get hooked....
Because of the horsepower your Lakota produes, you'll probably want either a v paddle, or a Hauler "Glider" paddle. These are alittle esy to turn for the smaller 4-strokes. If you go, I forsee a much more powerful quad in your future...lol...it's really addicting...
Just a note...if you go, ask someone there if you can follow along to get used to how to ride the dunes...you can get into trouble very quickly if you just go blazing off by yourself.
There is also ALOT of area for you to take the kids and be away from the crowds.

You can allways find a good area for families. It is a very large desert. The crowd stays nearest to the pavement. Even on Thanksgiving, I go with my family, and we don't have any other camp within 1/2 mile (or more).
