I live 3 hours from glamis, last winter I went the weekend after New Years and on the flats there where about a 100 Rv's. When I went riding very rarly saw big groups of people. On the big weekend (thanksgiving, newyears, and other 3 dayers)it is packed, but is is always a blast. About the tires, if it is your first time the razors will work fine, My first trip out I used them and made it up Olds hill, not fast but it was fun!!!
Next time I went I had paddles and hooked up alot faster. Hope this helped

I would not make the trip from Illinois without getting paddles. The first time I went to the dunes I used regular tires. I got around but I could not keep up with anyone with paddles. I recommend the edge type or Sand-Skate II both slide really well. Or you can get Hauller types for hill climbing. The paddles are expensive but so is the cost of getting to Glamis from Illinois. You can ride without paddles but to really experience the dunes you need Paddles. Just my opinion it depends on how much cash you have and how often you will use them. They don’t wear out unless you ride them on pavement or hardback.
Ride on and keep the dunes open. Oh yea a large portion of Glamis will be closing as of November 22 see the following web site for info. http://www.glamisonline.org/dunes
Good luck on your trip.
