I may be asking the wrong people but here goes....Anyone here ride or ride with Dirt bikes in the sand dunes? Do they need paddles? My brother is nervous that his XR600 will be no fun at Silver Lake without paddles. THANKS Daniel

 

It can be done, but he's alot better off with a paddle, especially with a big four stroke.

 

All of the Bikes I've seen at the Oregon Dunes run with sand tires... You may not have as much trouble if the sand is not too soft, and you run 3-4 lbs of air. I did see a bike that had dirt tires getting about 5 feet of air on the jumps, but it was in the back of a truck! (I'm not sure the driver had any sense... we stayed far away from him).

 

I HAVE TAKEN A 87' YZ 250 WITHOUT A PADDLE TO THE SAND HILLS HERE IN COLORADO AND IT SEEMED TO DO PRETTY GOOD AS LONG AS YOU KEPT MOVING, BUT IF YOU STOP DONT SIT THERE AND KEEP THE REAR TIRE SPINNING, FASTER WONT BE BETTER UNLESS YOUR TRYING TO DIG A HOLE! MY BUDDY DID THIS. ALL THE KNOBBIES START ACTING LIKE SHOVELS THAT IS WHY ON PADDLE TIRES THEY ARE USULLY SPACED SO MUCH BETWEEN PADDLES. MORE FLOATATION LESS DIGGING. I PLAN ON TRYING A PADDLE TIRE THIS YEAR SHOULD MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. YOUR BRO SHOULD BE FINE BUT IF HE ENJOYS THE SAND ALOT THE INVEST IN A TIRE ABOUT $60

yea, just like spanky said. you wont need a paddle to have some fun. but, if you plan on going more than once a year get one. either way you still have to learn how to ride in the sand, its totally different than dirt.
